Needy dogs in shelters and Barack Obama are about to have something in common. In addition to being “mutts” like Obama, they are now also the subject of an iconic Shepard Fairey poster. As the new first family readies to move into the White House and adopt a shelter puppy, millions of other animals around the U.S. desperately await homes. Shepard was approached by Pia Salk, an animal advocate working with the non-profit Adopt-a-Pet.com, to collaborate on a way to help these animals.
Fairey says, “I’m a big believer in speaking up for all who suffer injustice, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation or in this case, species! And I’m all for adopting from the shelter. My wife and I share our home with two pooches, George and Weezie, who is a rescue. They are the happy canine siblings to our two human daughters. The image I created for this print reminds me of a dog I had as kid, a mutt named Honey.”
The image will be available in a limited run of 400 signed and numbered silk-screen prints later this month at muttslikeme.com. Proceeds from the sale will go to getting the nation’s “furry, non-partisan residents” into homes. In true Shepard Fairey-fashion, you can also download free wheat-pasteable PDFs and digital-age web banners on the site. Get the word out!

If there’s one thing that you’ve learned from us down the stretch of this recently passed Presidential election, it could be that a lot of merchandise has been made in support of Barack Obama. The current President-Elect has inspired the sale of everything from prints to moose antlers. But what will become of all of that good stuff now that the voting is over. Well, the folks at Zazzle have taken an everything must go approach. The online T-shirt and apparel site is slashing prices 10 percent on all political merchandise before November 8th. If you’re hope is still getting the better of you and you want some Obama merch to savor the flavor of victory, all you’ve got to do is type in the promo code: ObamaZazzle. If you’re a dejected McCain supporter or ironic hipster voter whose only relief would come from a recount, you’re included too. All McCain goodies get the same treatment as long as you type in McCainZazzle for your discount. So if in the next two days anyone asks you if they can get cheap election memorabilia, you can reply, “Yes We Can!”

What’s the first order of business the next president will take care of come January? Hammering out a lasting solution to the world economic crisis? Crafting a reasonable timetable to withdraw troops from Iraq? Liaising with an increasingly dangerous Pakistan? Are you serious? It’s his presidential portrait.
Later today the trash-as-treasure guys from NYC Garbage will post their version of “President Barack Obama,” a 12″ x 16″ limited edition print that will support the Obama campaign by donating the $100 price tag to the Senator from Illinois. ($50 for their registered Republican friends)

The candidacy of Barack Obama is inspiring politically conscious artists to create at a never before seen breakneck pace. The latest artist to nod in the direction of everyone’s favorite hopemonger is Spear favorite Dan Funderburgh. Funderburgh’s most recent letter press, the red, white, and blue hued “Census“, may not directly reference the Illinois Senator, but Funderburgh hopes that it can aid his preferred candidate. All the proceeds from this limited run of 75 signed and numbered prints go directly to the Obama campaign. The poster is currently available at the I Am Still Alive Store.

Over the last twenty years, either a Bush or Clinton has held sway over the oval office, ruling with an iron fist. While Billary (why has this name not caught on yet, it's better than Bennifer or Brangelina?) vie to extend that streak to an astounding twenty-four years, there are plenty of people who would like that to see that reign end. One of those people is acclaimed poster artist and illustrator, Shepard Fairey. Fairey's preferred agent of change is none other than Illinois Senator Barack Obama. It's his and many others belief that Obama represents a renewed hope and progress for a faltering nation. Inspired by his candidate of choice, Fairey has created two breathtaking new posters trumpeting both the “HOPE” and “PROGRESS” that come along with the candidate running on a platform of change. Fairey is selling screen prints of these two creations to raise money for a large statewide poster campaign. The prints are available starting tomorrow, so if you support Obama or just superb artwork, why not pick up a poster for yourself? After all, Super Tuesday is just around the corner.
