You may or may not have heard that it’s Diesel’s 30th birthday. We blogged about a killer worldwide party they are throwing yesterday, but how about some ultra-limited-edition-on-sale-for-one-day-only denim? After all they are a denim company. Thirty thousand jeans have been distributed around the globe to go on sale October 10th — and that’s it. The jeans are quite cheap for limited edition standards (and for Diesel’s standards). For â‚30 and a couple hours waiting in line you can get your hands on a pair of these highly desired jeans. The Dirty Thirtys will be available in physical stores only on October the 10th, then on eBay for god awful price thereafter.

Over the past few days a colossal architectural framework has slowly been erected at Pier 3 under the promenade in Brooklyn Heights. While we have to admit, our curiosity had been piqued we have yet to explore the reasons for the sudden appearance of this behemoth structure.

Luckily, for us the folks at mcbrooklyn allowed their curiosity to get the better of them and thus have blown
the lid off of a huge event. It seems that Diesel is setting the stage for one of the all time blowouts to take place on the Kings County border as they’ll be hosting a large dose of rock and roll madness and mayhem on October 11th.

The brand will invite 5,000 of their besties along with some of the top trendsetters (ooh…me…me!) to witness some serious theatrics and kick ass tunes for the grand finale of an 18 city international party known as the Diesel xXx “Rock and Roll Circus”. The gala will feature everything from fire eaters, trapeze artists, sword swallowing, cabaret, and even female roller derby squads to go along with performances from musical heavyweights N.E.R.D., M.I.A., and Hot Chip (and more). It’s the kind of lineup that looks to redefine the phrase “good time.” As long as there are no clowns.

David Carvalho is up to more good. The Portugese artist and designer, also known as Karpa, wowed us back in December with his astonishing portfolio boasting works for clients such as Nike, Puma, and IdN magazine. We’re pleased to report that he’s come back with a bang thanks to a recent site update that gives us even more graphic wonders to swoon over. Visitors to Hello Karpa will be greeted with ten new works, including a billboard for Diesel and a spread for Japanese clothiers, Evisu. As if that weren’t enough, Carvalho is also offering up his ‘Divad’ typeface for download, allowing all of us to satisfy our need for sweet graphic design and typography in one fell swoop.

Most artists long to show their unique vision of the world to people all over the globe. While worldwide artistic domination might be a tall order, the folks at Diesel are giving artists the chance to start small in a big way…by taking over a large slice of city. The Diesel Wall Project is an opportunity for up-and-coming artists to have their work seen on a large scale by occupying one of four massive Diesel walls, housed in major cities around the world. This is a chance for aspiring artistic geniuses to be seen and enrich the lives of many with one simple or not so simple work of art. What are you waiting for? Well for starters, you're probably waiting for the contest to start accepting submissions on March 31st, but other than that we recommend you get to work and check out the Diesel Wall website for your chance to make your mark in Barcelona, Manchester, New York, or Zurich. From there, who knows the places you'll go?

We know you're a fiend for jeans. You've probably got a pair for every day of the week…at least. However, if you spend all day, dreaming about a sportier pair to add to your collection, perhaps you should seek out the new line of Adidas Denim Originals by Diesel. The collaboration between the two global megabrands combines Diesel's unique sense of youthfulness with the classic appeal of the Adidas sportswear. The jeans are emblazoned with the Adidas logo in the patch area in addition to the ‘three stripes’ trademark found on the pant leg…and the fit…well it's just as snug as your favorite pair of Sambas. We recommend heading down to the nearest Adidas store as these babies should be available any day now.

Last year, Diesel sent frequent collaborator and bare-body-parts-loving photographer Terry Richardson on a worldwide jaunt for their From Rio to Hong Kong exhibit, which is yep, already over by now. But while he was in Rio de Janeiro shooting the show’s inclusions, Diesel’s Brazilian team pegged the idea to put a book together of just the photos he took of the Cariocas in the Wonderful City. Rio, Cidade Maravilhosa features some of Rio’s celebrities like actress Camila Pitanga mixed in with smooching drag queens, frolicking beach boys and girls at Ipanema’s Posto 9 section of beach, and rowdy baile funk partygoers — probably the only time that all these different groups can be found in such close proximity to each other at the same time, the same place, and in perfect T&A harmony. But the bad news: The book’s currently only available at Diesel stores in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, but according to Rio bookseller Travessa, it’ll hit a fine bookstore near you (check Colette and stores in L.A.) eventually. Cruise by some of the photos at RG Vogue’s site here, Globo’s here and watch a trailer for the book here.

Good news for all of us living in crowded urban areas: you no longer have to crank your headphones up to max in order to ignore the onslaught of sirens, car horns, and diesel engines! Of course, you do have to put up with wearing something called “bone-conducting headphones.” Anyone else find that terminology a little bit creepy?

The Outi bone-conducting headphones supposedly allow you to crank up your music as loud as you’d like (much like the SwiMP3 does) without having to worry about going deaf down the road because they work by transmitting sound through your cartilage, skin and bones instead of through your ear drums, vibrating at just the right frequency allowing you to “hear” the music instead of feeling it, and they run on a small amp that lasts for 8 hours before having to be recharged. Oh, and they clip on the outside of your ears, so they don’t look the least bit funny when you’re wearing them. Sounds pretty sweet to me.

My roommate stumbled onto this website last night and got all giddy with excitement. He pointed me to a place called Metrofarm, and it became immediately apparent why he was so excited. In fact, not surprisingly, Josh posted about their concrete DJ tables last year. Since then, they’ve expanded their repertoire — these guys do everything, and they do it all very well. Furniture, object design, graphic design, retail displays, party and event production, you name it. Basically, I’m just green with envy; anyone who can set up shop doing whatever they want impresses the hell out of me. And, with a client list ranging from Nike to Absolut to Diesel, they’ve managed to impress someone else pretty well too.

When Godmother, co-founder of premium denim label 5EP, learned about the Styleforum message boards from a member/customer, her interest was piqued and shortly after, she was signed up and posting. What she found was a diverse collection of (mostly) males discussing a broad range of topics from clothing trends and design to more practical subjects such as pricing or laundering techniques. The ball was set in motion, and soon moderator LA Guy and Denimbar owner Mauro found themselves corresponding with Godmother on a potential special edition collaboration between 5EP and Styleforum. Released this week, as a culmination of over 7 months of work, with leadership and final approval from the aforementioned trio, plus dozens of pages of feedback from forum members: a straight leg jean with a mid-low rise cut from raw Japanese selvage. The denim is a slim cut, not super skinny, so you’ll want to get your true size for a slim fit or size up one if you don’t want to deal with the hassles of not breathing as you break in your pair. Limited to just 200 pairs, they will be available from Styleforum, Denimbar, Oak, and Hollywood Trading Company. If you’ve grown out of your True Religions and Diesel jeans and are ready to move up a tier in the world of premium denim, you might want to give any of these locations a call, or better yet, visit them and try on a pair.

Created for the inner nerd in all of us — the ultra-dope, inner nerd, that is — Rhombus Wear is a clothing line created by husband & wife team James and Lisa Clunie. She’s a fashion designer and he’s an art director. Their line was created to fit that little fashion niche you find in creative industries…you know, the one where we don’t have to wear a suit to work and wander around in jeans and flip-flops while trying to adhere to the unwritten code of what’s cool in a hipster-centric work environment like an ad agency. That niche.

The Rhombus line features a variety of dressed down clothes in plaids and custom prints like “standardized test” and “binary” — yes, like the computer code. Inspired by math and science, and art and design, Rhombus’ clothes are aimed squarely at creative professionals. So if you’re getting sick of your Diesels and want something with that underground/no-one-knows-about-it-yet appeal, definitely keep an eye on Rhombus.

I’ve been listening to some songs from the Diesel International Music Contest, and I’m enjoying what I’m hearing: a wide array of tracks from unsigned artists, ranging from hip hop, to electronica, to indie. Looks like there’s still time for you musicians out there to enter the judging pool as well. You have until May 13th to join the ‘Cult’ and upload your tracks to be considered. From the perspective of someone who can’t play a lick of music on any instrument, this is at the very least a great place to go to discover some new bands that you may have not heard of yet– for instance, I’m loving Northern Ireland-come-U.K. indie folk band The Sleeping Years.

I almost forgot to mention, while the other JS and I were down devouring art fairs in Miami, we had a chance to spend a few minutes hands-on with (fondling inside and out) the new devilishly-fast looking Audi R8. The car was a bit of a surprise, it was placed inside the entrance to Design Miami, the event was apparently entirely sponsored by Audi (the A8’s in the entryway with Zaha Hadid’s name in the window must have tipped us off). The fender flares were mean, as expected, and the interior as we had dreamed. We didn’t get to actually drive the car, but I could feel the 650hp turbo diesel engine just dying to be started– unfortunately, no keys in the glove box, under the seat, or anywhere to be found. We’ll check in with the R8 again this weekend at the Detroit Auto Show again, I’m sure. More eye candy after the jump.

As Josh mentioned a few days ago, we weren’t all that impressed with the shopping opportunities in Miami (at least from an individualism standpoint). With the exception, of BASE World, we were faced with ‘run of the mill’ stores that you can find in any big city. That’s not to say we didn’t have a ton of fun trying on denim at the Diesel store, or jackets at the Barneys Co-op. The most consistently impressive clothes we saw, however, had to have been from Nice Collective. The Barneys Co-op had stocked quite a bit of their stuff, and Josh and I must have tried on it all. Each jacket, sweater, and hoodie felt like a dream to wear– the fit, the details, the winter comfort factor– it was all there. We definitely will be tracking Nice Collective’s progress and new lines to come.

After test driving a new Volkswagen Touareg yesterday, I have even more respect for the brand than I did before. I have always thought of VW as a go-to brand for people who want German engineering and performance but don’t want to pay for an Audi. It is hard to argue with a V-10 turbo diesel rocket ship-of a vehicle that felt more like a sports-car than an SUV to drive. Granted, $70,000 is a lot to pay for an SUV, but I imagine the new Touareg still towers above the new Range Rover Sport in the performance-to-price price category– it sure did turn in impressive performances at Dakar and the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb this year. To continue their already impressive engineering track record, Volkswagen just spent $39 million on a new harsh weather testing facility. They can now put their vehicles through temperatures ranging from -40 to 302 degrees Fahrenheit and simulate direct sunlight and soaking humidity. One thing’s for sure: the people at VW are serious about engineering top-quality automobiles.

Diesel1-3

I have grown to expect great things from Diesel over the years, and although they have been around since 2001, the three Diesel Denim Galleries (New York, Tokyo, and Osaka) help set Diesel apart from the other denim brands. Diesel uses their denim galleries to combine under one roof contemporary art with limited edition product– in the words of Diesel founder Renzo Rosso, ‘to support new talent in music, fashion and art,’ the ‘keystone’ of the Diesel brand. The current exhibit in New York is entitled ‘The Everburning Lights of the Serpent Handler’– it’s a 5-year retrospective of the Diesel Denim Gallery. And while many of you may find it difficult to make the trip to NYC, Tokyo, or Osaka, Diesel just launched a website to give you a taste from the comfort of your own home.
