We’ve fawned over Nick Comer-Calder’s strong, elegant, and beautiful guitar cases before, so we’re happy to report that his UK-based company has recently branched into another area in need of some high-quality protection: computers. The latest to join the family of made-to-order safeguards are these sleek laptop cases, hand built from Calder’s signature combination of organic leather and carbon fiber. That red one has been made to the size specifications of the highly rumored Apple Featherbook to be debuted next year (and will also fit a variety of sub-compacts), so if you’ve already started your Christmas wish-list, you’ll probably to make room for A) even more Apple IOU’s; and B) the cases you’ll need to keep those products safe. As in: even under the tires of a 2000-lb vehicle. Yes, they really did that.

Some of my favorite content on the site comes from our fashion vaults (that probably has a lot to do with my love for fashion, but I really do think we have found some fabric gems). I frequently find myself sifting through the archives to see what we’ve written about so I can give references to interested friends. Then I thought: why not do the same for all of you? So here it is– my top fashion picks from our vault. Just in time for holiday shopping!

Early this afternoon, we were lucky enough to wrangle some impromptu press passes into Design Miami in the Design District. We were greeted right off the bat by our old friend, the Audi R8 (Audi sponsored the event– more on that later). We then ventured into the four story, open-aired atrium, and saw some furniture from classic Nakashimas to wild conceptual pieces, lighting applications, and art. Among our (very) favorites were the Wendell Castle ‘Wishbone Chair’ (sold for a cool $65,000, picture after the jump), made out of one piece of solid oak, the lighting applications of Panton Lighting, and the Weiki Somers ‘Bathboat Tub.’ Mark Newson was named Designer of the Year– no surprise there; we were, however, dissappointed that we didn’t get to see him speak along side people like Zaha Hadid (who just designed the new BMW factory in Leipzig Germany). Overall, Design Miami was a perfect one stop place to shop for some of the best design we’ve seen in a while. Check out some pictures of the event after the jump.

Words can’t really do the latest Ikepod (Marc Newson’s wristwatch line) any justice, so thank god for photos. The Horizon watch, pictured above features a hexagonal honeycomb dial creating an optical illusion that it’s convex. The “Horizon” name makes reference to “Event Horizon” in astrophysics, literally meaning the edge of a black hole. Check out these watches– The Hemipode an Megapode equally as attractive, in fact, I think they’re absolutely gorgeous.

The Design Idols are a line of posters created to idolize industrial designers in a way that rock and movie stars are. Each poster has a graphical representation of the well-known designer whose visionary work has inspired us in the past, joined with a personal quote on design. They’ve got 10 posters, from a nice collection of designers, like Tom Dixon, Karim Rashid, Michael Young (shown) and Marc Newson. The Design Idols series was created by a young group of Belgian designers, calling themselves the Disorder Collectiv. They’re printed in a limited edition of 1000, and of course every designer was contacted personally and approved the concept and supplied a quote.

Industrial design legend Marc Newson teamed up with the raw denim hounds at G-STAR to bring us G-Star by Marc Newson. The guy who has designed restaurants, concept cars for Ford, the interiors of jets (Qantas first class), and private homes has sat down with the denim experts and come up with some seriously sweet designs. I can’t wait to see these new designs in person when they roll out to the flag-ship stores. The G-Star denim I’ve got, I love to death.

Marc Newson designed this multipurpose shoe for cosmonauts, wow. Looks a little bit like those crocs we saw a little while back, doesn’t it? Japans HUGE magazine had the first pictures of the new shoes. This is Marc Newsons explantion of his creation “From a functional point of view, my experience at the Russian Space agency intrigued and inspired me to develop a multi-purpose shoe for Cosmonauts. Nike is a high performance sports company, and I couldn’t think of a more challenging environment than Zero-G in which to push these limits.”
