At the end of February we tipped you off to the first of three web films, an astonishing claymation piece on adidas founder Adi Dassler, that helped kick off the sportswear brand’s Celebrate Originality Campaign. Nearly a month and a half later, we’ve got the scoop on round two. The second film entitled The Superstar Film a.k.a. “The Left-Right Project” documents what happened when a gigantic pair of the iconic ADIDAS Superstar (shell-toe) sneakers were dispersed to opposite ends of the North American continent and bestowed upon two groups of talented artists, who were then faced with the task of adorning said blank canvas with the aesthetic of their particular coast. As you’ll see, the west coast contingent featuring artists from San Francisco’s Upper Playground and the East Coast crew made up of artists from NYC’s Surface 2 Air, came up with stunningly original works of art that while completely different, seem quite complementary. Check out photos and behind the scenes footage of the making of these dope designs for yourself at the campaign’s HQ and you’ll see just what we’re talking about.

To introduce its Adidas Skateboarding line in Brazil, Adidas has gone old-school and revamped a 1985 Kombi Volkswagen with its trademark three stripes in a blue color theme and sketches by legendary skater Mark Gonzalez, stocked it with gear and is taking the show(room) on the road for a five-month tour of Sao Paulo. The concept is of a mobile pop-up store, which Adidas hopes will click well with skateboarders and anyone who likes traveling on four wheels, no matter their size. Samsung's hooked into the promotion too, pitching in with a TV that will run skateboard videos and MP3 players filled with playlists compiled by famous skaters.

Check out the nice limited edition shoes over at Commonwealth, the Adidas ‘American Lux‘– an instant and timeless classic. Red, white and blue snake skin, leather uppers, perforated leather inner lining– pimp cup not included. Congrats to the guys for the (almost) opening of their new DC Flagship shop in a few days. These guys totally ‘get it’– and continue to stock some of the best clothes, kicks and gear cash-money can buy.

One of my favorite collaboration brands Oki-ni is having a pretty big sale on mens clothing, sneakers and accessories. Faves include the Marathon 80 Oki-ni/adidas collaboration an the dozens of fairly rare and hard to find t-shirts. Limited edition Oki-ni stuff is never this cheap (45 GBP for the adidas sneakers). Check it out if you’re in a shop and browse mood.

Rollerskate

I received a lot of feedback and questions regarding the Adidas roller skates I mentioned I saw earlier this week in Daikanyama. I was a little bit off on the price, they’re actually only 41,000 Yen or about $375. I was in the neighborhood again today and was able to swing into the Adidas Styles shop to take a peak again and snap this quick photo. By the looks of them they’ve got to be custom made– an older adidas runner bolted down to a skate base. Even the wheels and old-school front break match the blue Adidas stripes though– what a tempting collectors item!

I really enjoyed shopping in Daikanyama, it’s a fairly quiet neighborhood set back from the flashing lights of neighboring Shibuya. Over the next few days I’ll be highlighting a few of my favorite shops from this neighborhood. Although there are a dozen Adidas shops throughout Tokyo, the Daikanyama Adidas Styles shop is worth mentioning just for all the retro sneakers they have for sale behind glass: Old school Adidas roller skates for 41,000 Yen, 25 year old classic running shoes, etc. If you go into the entrance to the Adidas shop but continuing walking towards the back, there’s a small boutique called Stitch in the back. This was the shop that had what looked like a shared space with Adidas for an Adicolor room I shared earlier this week. Stitch felt a bit like a cross between Kid Robot and the MoMa shop aimed at a much more savvy clientele. Lots of Maharishi, designer toys, some select sneakers, nice t-shirts and a solid collection of mid-century furniture. Eames, Eames, and more Eames. This country loves good design! If you’re shopping in Daikanyama, these two stores are a must stop.

Shopping in Tokyo is unreal– the sheer number of options for stores to check in the 10+ different neighborhoods all twice the size of Soho is just pure insanity. Unless of course you’re in the mood to explore, drop some cash and come home smiling– yesterday, even in the rain exploring Daikanyama was pure bliss. It’s been interesting to see the all the adicolor branding throughout Tokyo– some truly great brand experiences here. These shots are from within the shared space of the Adidas and Stich stores (reviews coming soon) in Daikanyama. Adidas films are playing on a flat screen t.v., limited edition wears as well as many not for sale hang from the ceiling. Tokyo is taking this Adicolor campaign very serious– one more shot from inside after the jump.

Watching the slow and decisive adicolor relaunch has been fascinating, all the advertising and marketing has been dead on and executed so well. The latest stunt is some fun product placement which puts the adicolor products in “real-life scenarios”– slipped in here and there in some of New York City’s classic bodega/corner stores, a piece of New York culture that is often over looked. This shoe placement between the Tampax and postcards on top of the soda machine is definitely one of my favorite. The 7 locations around NYC after the jump.

Seven adicolor Locations:

1. Deli Spring & Lafayette: Soho
2. Marlow & Sons: Williamsburg/Brooklyn
3. Grand Food Market Inc Grand and Crosby
4. Deli on Prince and Sullivan
5. Jewel News: Union Square
6. DeliMart: North 7/Bedford/Brooklyn
7. Deli Next to Arlene's Grocery: Lower East Side

I had a chance to see the Adicolor demo at an Adidas Store in Boston last weekend and just had to share how much I enjoyed watching the creative process. The pure white ground really lets the artist imagination flow– I especially liked the graffiti style of this artist, who preferred to stay nameless. These pictures don't do them justice so if you have the chance to attend a demo, don't miss it! Also, congratulations to the winner of the Josh Spear: Adicolor Giveaway last week! And, if you haven’t seen the latest Adicolor Campaign, please check it out, it’s a must see.

I’ve long said that corporations need to operate within the laws of the universe in which they’re exploring. Adidas (or their European advertising company) clearly understands this with their latest Adicolor campaign– in fact they just about nailed it in my opinion. They launched in phases: First adidas put up blank white posters branded with the Adidas logo and a Leonardo Da Vinci quote which read “For those colours which you wish to be beautiful, always first prepare a pure white ground”, seen in the top left here. This was essentially an open invitation for graffiti artists and the like to tag each and every inch, which they did, seen on bottom left. And finally after a few days of mayhem they came back to the same ads and placed another poster over it of the Adicolor sneaker, incorporating tags and masking artwork in from the first layer, seen here on the right. Being Hunted has an awesome stage by stage photo gallery of the results, very well executed. See the Sony PSP campaign for a failed attempt, aka, not operating within the rules of the universe.

The Adicolor launch is in full effect worldwide and the DIY shoes are flying off store shelves and internet sites like hot cakes. Karmaloop was one of the few online retailers to get a handful of these puppies– and I’ve got a pair of the low shell toes (and the paints and whole kit that come with) to give away to one lucky reader. If you’re unfamiliar with the revival of the Adicolor products, check out the Adidas site for more details.Want ‘em? Sign up for the mailing list and I’ll choose one random name in the next 48 hours. It’s all in the luck of the draw…

“Before you create with your foot, create the boot that goes on it.” That's the motto Adidas stuck to when designing TUNIT, the first-ever soccer boot you can tune to adapt to the weather, field conditions, and even your own playing style. TUNIT's interchangeable design allows you to pair it with the chassis and studs of your choice, creating your perfect boot. Adidas integrated ClimaCool®, ClimaWarm® and ClimaProof® materials to create Clima365™, a material that allows for head to toe temperature optimization. The TUNIT is available from Adidas by the pair or in a premium set which contains a plethora of boot options including multiple uppers, chassis, and studs.

I don’t really know (or care) whether this is an enthusiastic adidas fan, or a sting mission into the blog world by corporate adidas. The content on the new ILOVEMYADIDAS blog is fresh. It’s all about “those three stripes”, it’s like adidas-porn, new and old, limited editions and futuristic sneakers. Check it out…

I just added some of the funky adidas All Black’s into my shoe mix over here at the headquarters. They’re from the famed adidas Oddity collection, a wacky line of funky mismatched colors, patterns, and fabric swatches. I got them online from Commonwealth, a great shop with all sorts of footwear, tee’s, and accessories. It was a tough choice to get these puppies, I’m still drooling all over the super crazy Rising Star Odditys– I’ll have to get those ones soon, too.
