The Nike 6.0 Buzz Aldrin Rocket Hero Mavrk Mid 2. To infinity an beyond! Available at select retailers January 1st.
The Mavrk Mid 2 is constructed with a cold-wrap process, which allows the reduction of material in the outsole for a significantly lighter shoe while reducing the use of harmful solvents. The insertion of a true mid-sole offers increased impact absorption while integrated Nike Free inspired flex-grooves on the outsole allow for torsional flex and board-feel for true lightweight performance. A stitchless toe creates a clean finish and amplifies durability.
The A.P.C. x All Court Sneakers. Some of my favorite shoes lately– I’ve been rocking the red accent ones for a few months, now they’re available in black on white canvas. And, for sale online for 90 Euros. Hat tip to Hypebeast for the heads up.
Our friend Jeff Staple was given two Kia cars to redesign. The first result: RAIN CAMO! Perfect for blending into urban rainscapes. Who knew a Kia could look so good. The car was created in part with the Kia Soul Collective tour and will be on display at each stop (today in Chicago). Check out Jeff’s site for a few more pictures and some of his inspiration.
Dan Ziglam and Elliot Brook are the directors of UK-based design firm, Deadgood, where everything they make is “deadgood”. The young company has already made Elle Decoration's ‘Brit Talent Hot List' and Design Week's '50 People Making a Difference in Design' for their innovative Form chairs, wire table lamps, bookshelves and hangers. We, of course, love great furniture design, but Deadgood really made our radar when they announced an upcoming collaboration with Jon Burgerman. The doodle chair is screen-printed with a resin-impregnated craft core, overlaid with melamine and pressed at high temperature. It recently made a successful debut in New York and is expected to launch in September. Completely awesome.
Perennial VA/DC favorite Commonwealth has teamed up with Billabong for a series of board shorts made from a new fabric called Eco-Supreme Suede. The material is made from recycled pure polyester and can be recycled at the end of their life. It takes about ten recycled 12 oz plastic bottles to produce a pair of the tiger camo shorts. I am not a fan of the current options for men’s beachwear but depending how this new Billabong fabric feels, I will probably grab a pair when I am in DC next week. Via Highsnobiety
Art on the Internet is permanent in many ways, yet ephemeral in others. Things sell out, pictures are removed, sites fade away, links get broken. There's also a lot of art out there that's not meant to last forever. Maybe it gets lost or worn out or removed or eaten up. Doodlesplatter was born out of a desire to present a complete, centralized “artkive†of the work of Jon Burgerman. With just a few clicks, you'll see Jon illustrate that any surface can be a canvas. Whether you're sick on a plane (airplane vomit bag) or stuck in the rain (umbrella collab with SIZE?), Jon's doodles are there to captivate and bring cheer. Doodlesplatter catalogs over 300 items from Jon’s expansive portfolio, with options to search by medium, use and year. The frequently updated blogography features doodles by Jon exclusive to the project, the infamous lost Doodle Beat interview, brilliant web design by The Neon Hive and a complete case of OCD by me.
It’s really great to see how far Kozyndan (Husband and Wife team, Kozy/Dan) have come since we covered them nearly 3 years ago. From posters and artwork to designing sneakers for global brands. Congrats, these Puma pieces look great– and one of my favorite slip ons!
Last November, Nike put out a line of high top vandals in three solid colors red, white and black. Every square millimeter of the shoe was red, white or black. The overdrive of one tone of color was definitely a head turner. All three original colors were in a very limited run (hint: flightclub still has some). Nylon (the magazine) took notice and has now paired with Nike to put out five new Nylon colors. I can tell right now, these are going to be controversial. But if you can pull off shoes like these, it’s amazing, but it definitely isn’t easy. I still have a soft spot for the original red shoe, but I’m curious to see someone wearing these new Nylon colors.Â
British illustrator and designer vinyl pioneer, James Jarvis, has teamed up with Nike for a whimsical non-linear animation. The project was proposed and produced by Jarvis with the end result being, he hopes, “a much more equal collaboration with a brand.” Although the idea was to explore characters that were not referential, Onward, explores the subject of running free, and is inspired by Jarvis’ own experiences: “a favourite run over Blanchland moor in Northumberland, being attacked by a crow in Singapore – and also by the transcendent, almost psychedelic experience of the simple act of running.”
Notably, while Jarvis’ vinyl toys have been getting fatter (ie. Martin X and Yod), Onward features a slimmed down Lance Armstrong yellow “potato-headed stickman.” Jarvis, who is an avid runner, but suffered a stress fracture setback, said that making the video gave him perspective and “re-affirmed the simple pleasure of just running. Being injured, what I miss isn’t the racing but just getting out there and doing it.” The video is directed by Richard Kenworthy with music from Caribou.
My favorite neighborhood sneaker dealers at ALIFE have just released another collaboration with Barney’s New York– a pair of classic high’s called The Orange Pack. Full grain perforated leather with orange accents– crisp, clean, and ready for the courts, sidewalks, and well, everywhere else. They’ll be available (in limited quantities I would guess) at select Barney’s locations and if you’re not in the city, through their online store.
After prior partnerships, with the likes of Wood Wood and DPM, you could say that Penfield is no stranger to dope collaborative. This Fall season they’ve prepared yet another piece de resistance by joining forces with NYC based streetwear store Alife Rivington Club to churn out a technically taut wind-runner jacket, the stylish and shipshape 100% nylon A.R.C. Penfield jacket. It comes in three color combinations full ofouterwear amenities such as pouch pockets, an adjustable hood, and elastic cuffs.
I wear (almost) exclusively collaboration or quickstrike sneakers, so believe me when I say nobody does it better than Atmos. Just the other night, I was showing a friend all the small details that they put in their kicks. Continuing this trend of innovation and quality, Atmos has teamed up with (the other) beloved striped shoemaker K-Swiss for a six part collection. The featured shoes include the Classic Lo’s (black & white), Classic Luxury Edition Boot Jewel, Si-18 Bristel High, and Si-18 Rannell. The sneakers are unmistakeably K-Swiss but with twists like D-ring lacing, suede, gold accents, and even crystals in the Luxury Edition boots. Limited to just 300 pairs globally, the collection is dropping September 18 at Atmos Harlem as well as Saks Fifth Avenue with Atmos Toyko debuting on September 28th. Mark your calendars!
These days, you can hardly round a city block without coming across wheat-pasted, stenciled and sticker-bombed walls. With artists like Shepard Fairey and Banksy getting plenty of attention for their street art, there is an “artist” you’ve likely encountered but for whom fame remains elusive…until now. Brooklyn designer Grotesk is calling out the original kings of NY sticker art as the folks behind the “stuck gate” stickers. The yellow and black rectangular notices are adhered to metal gates and offer help to shopkeepers with malfunctioning gates. They are a part of the New York City landscape, and Grotesk collected them over several years of walking around the five buroughs. Empire Gates and crew will finally achieve a small dose of glory when on September 15th, 5BORO Skateboards will release this tribute skateboard and t-shirt.
Disclaimer: no polar bears or snow leopards were harmed during the creation of these shoes… National Geographic imagery meets sneaker design in this collaboration between PUMA, Atmos NYC, and Japanese photographer Mitsuaki Iwago. Through two releases– the Polar Pack and the Asia Pack, sneaker buffs will be treated to a series of kicks inspired by Mitsuaki Iwago’s famed wildlife photos. The outsides of the shoes capture the unique characteristics of various animals, and each (removable) insole sports Iwago’s actual photos on them. The final touch is that both the name and habitat of each animal is printed on the reverse tongue and on the outsole in both English and – you guessed it – Japanese.
The Polar Pack will be on sale only at Atmos NYC and Ubiq in Philadelphia beginning on June 28th, and you can expect the Asia Pack to drop later this summer.
