Exactly ten years ago, summertime in every city was lit up for those listening by a warm weather anthem that wasn’t a hip hop song or a club banger. The distinct bossa nova kick and the breezy female vocal of Nicola Conte’s ‘Bossa Per Due’ is ever familiar, even if his name isn’t. The producer, DJ, snappy dresser, and purveyor of all sounds Italian doesn’t play out a ton, but he’s coming to the Highline Ballroom. He’ll be on guitar, accompanied by a hand picked jazz ensemble for this one-off show. I’m in Rome right now, so I don’t know how the weather is back in New York, but I promise it’ll be warm and clear while he’s there!

There are a couple reasons why the name Peter Gregson should be stuck on your mind. First and foremost he is the brilliant classical cellist that we’ve raved about a number of times. Second, he is reinventing the way audiences interact with performers. Remember when he set up a Twitter wall concert? This time he’s taking his relationship with Twitter to the next level — as in straight to their home base. Peter will preform a live microconcert from Twitter HQ in San Fransisco. This isn’t just a treat for the employees, it’s also being broadcast in HD for all of us. Even the program notes are 140 characters.

Prelude Suite#1 (Bach), Spiegel im Spiegel (Part), Appalachian Waltz (O’Connor), Corpus Christi Carol (Britten), Song of the Birds (Beamish)

The show begins at 1:30 p.m. PST from Peter’s site or here. It will be available for HD streaming on demand if you miss it. Follow @petergregson or @coffeeloop for any updates. Otherwise, sit back and enjoy the midday musical stream from one of the best cello performers we know.

Nowadays, it seems like the flavor of the month, is a combination of all of them. Eleni Mandell, a Los Angeles based musician, and a fixture of the Silver Lake music scene, is back with a new album after her last one, Miracle of Fire, won critical acclaim.  All the songs on Artificial Fire, which drops February 17, are written by Mandell and she is backed by her longtime three-piece band. Together, they deliver tracks that are welcoming and upbeat but still a little mysterious and sometimes dark, but always witty.  Her sound is a mixture of synthesized jazz, country, folk, blues, rock and pop. L.A. CityBeat described her music as “a kind of pop-out-of-time…”  Don’t miss her performance along with JoshSpear.com favorite Theresa Andersson, tonight at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles. They are playing back to back and she takes the stage at 8 p.m. She is also playing in New York at Joe’s Pub on March 5th.  In the meantime, take a listen to the title track (MP3) from the upcoming Artificial Fire.

“We know you're dying to show off your single-speed bike with gold handlebars,” reads the upcoming San Francisco Outside Lands festival information for concertgoers. Don’t be too turned off — what better way to celebrate Radiohead being the first artist to play in Golden Gate Park at night? The former equestrian park will play host to 60+ performers during the arts and music-filled afternoons. Manu Chao, M. Ward, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will also be playing on August 22, 23, and 24, respectively.

The festival has a decent CrowdFire networking component where music fans (and those who would want to hear the music while holding onto their $225) can find and upload videos, audio, and blog posts. The online experience also has more information on greening the three-day experience than on its vendors — how very Bay Area. But please, no camping.

Less than a minute into the first track of Sonya Kitchell’s new album, This Storm, and I was hooked. With her debut, Words Came Back to Me, popping up in every Starbucks across American two years ago, Kitchell became a fixture on the late night circuit, CNN, and NPR. This year the 19-year-old phenom singer gets to tour with one of jazz’s most veteran: Herbie Hancock. The duo will sing songs from Hancock’s latest Grammy-winning album, The Joni Letters, while Kitchell will headline her own tour in support of This Storm (out September 3). Listen to the track, “For Every Drop”, right here.

Sometimes the best thing about catching an arena rock spectacle isn’t your favorite headliner, but the chance to see some pretty amazing opening acts before they start selling out arenas. If you’ve already snatched up tickets to the late summer leg of Coldplay’s North American summer tour (hitting a venue near you from July 20th to August 4th) we recommend you arrive at the show extra early to catch supporting act Santogold. The Brooklyn-based band fronted by Santi White busts out bombastic, bass-heavy tunes that mix elements of indie rock, punk, reggae and electro music that will add a little bounce to the step of Coldplay fans getting their quiet chill on.

The most delicate challenge that all music festivals organizers have to overcome is putting together a lineup that pleases a large enough number of John and Jane Musicfans, but also convinces them the ticket is worth the price. It’s a make-it or break-it deal and determines whether the festival will be staged again in the future. But let’s say you got to play curator and put together your own show befitting your tastes — seems like a shoe-in success, right? That’s precisely the approach the promoters of Sao Paulo’s annual Skol Beats electronic music fest is taking for this year’s event, set to take place at the end of September. It could set a regular concept into motion for other music fests. Skol Beats just opened a special forum on their site this week to let the public discuss potential headliners and other supporting acts (even options for VJs and possible formats like indoor/outdoor, hours and venue). Fans are already excited about the idea of Justice, Erlend Oye and Air adding their names to the roster for an event that, in the past, has included acts like The Prodigy and Sao Paulo’s own DJ Marky. Skol Beats will present a shortlist of artists culled from the discussion for a final vote later, with results to be shared August 22. See, this is the kind of election that we can really get behind.
