Another Ji Lee production!
The recent arrest of Roman Polanski for the rape of a 13 year old girl in 1977 has caused much debate around the world.
On one side, Polanski’s defenders argue he should be freed immediately because the case is too old. On the other side, Polanski’s non-sympathizers argue he should be tried just like any other sex offenders regardless of how old the case is.

My friend Jessica, turned me on to a site that gives you a sneak peek into the crazy world of homemade crafts on Etsy. Regretsy is a newly launched blog that takes submissions for wacky, silly, and some downright disgusting wares as they appear on Etsy. I’ve browsed Etsy in the past looking for very specific items such as handprinted thank you cards or stuffed animals for my friend’s toddler but I never took the time to browse. If Regretsy is any indication, I am glad I didn’t. Each item is paired with some snarky commentary and while Helen Killer (who seems to be the one running the show), often missed the mark with her jokes, the description and images of the item for sale are often all that’s needed. There are some truly insane items, many featuring female genitalia. Like MySpace and Blogger, when you make it easy for anyone to make a site or sell a product, you really bring out the freaks. Add Regretsy to your newserader for some daily gems that will surely make the email rounds at your office. [And yes, I am entirely aware of the irony of linking to my friend's Etsy page].

Campanhainstantanea: Enter in $5,000 for a budget at first, and click the different resulting components. Then do the same for a $5,000,000 budget. Awesome.
From the creators at Gringo:
You may be way above the little calamities of regular client work, but we were tired of having clients want to take control of their digital campaign, so we gave it to them! Let me know what you think!

Of all the wacky cross-culture mash-ups that come out of Japan, this one gets serious chutzpah points: Phenomenon paired seminal post-punk band, Public Image Limited, with animated feline time-traveler, Doraemon on two new T-shirts. The graphic mixes PiL’s logo with a more subtle reference to the cat’s colors, whiskers and collar. Of course if it takes you a minute to make the connection, Phenomenon sends it home by titling the shirt Pilemon. I think it’s both brilliant and bizarre to pay combined homage to an important band that released its greatest hits (so far) album in 1990 and an anime icon who fell into the shadow of Sanrio, but it does beg three questions: 1) Precisely how many people listen to post-punk and watch anime? 2) Why now? And 3) How quickly is John Lydon going to call his lawyer about this? Looks like white is already sold out. Black is available here.

When used correctly, the ever-expressive eyebrows can be a window into the soul …or at least into the opinion being formulated deep within. Those who are unfortunate sufferers of facial paralysis might never command the effective power of displaying worry through the furrowing of one’s brow or the curious inquiry hinted at by raising just one side. Fortunately, Tom Judd, a recent graduate of the masters in Animation program at the Royal College of Art, has come up with a solution for the unfortunate few with little control over their facial expressions. His Eyebrow Hat has harnessed the evocative power of one’s double fuzzies into a remote controlled device, capable of showing just what you might be feeling at any given time provided you haven’t run out of batteries.
When Mr. Judd isn’t busy helping those who can’t animate their own feelings, he’s busy putting together some kick ass cartoon work. His three and a half minute long masterpiece, Bruce, tells the tale of a boy who through the use of open source genetic programming, creates his very own pint-sized action hero . Sounds like something we’d like to have. Check it out here and be on the lookout for this rising illustrative talent.

Genius. It’s Urban Camo Against Crime. The direct translation: Bags and purses that look like newspapers to not get mugged. Pick your newspaper, The Dependent, The Thames, or Le Monte (or a few others depending the bag style).

I just received maybe the best paper invitation for an industry benefit I’ve ever seen. Announcing a Non-Event Garden Party for the 25th anniversary of Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids (DIFFA). The card says:
Feel good about not attending. No need to dress up, attend the party or listen to speeches. Just put on your most comfortable clothes and go about your day.
You do not have to attend yet another social function. You may plant the enclosed Seeds of Remembrance at your leisure on any day you choose. (Forget-me-nots included in the envelope), full invite inside below. Â Well done!
