Our friend Dan Funderburgh just released a great new print through The Working Proof– an online print gallery with a mission of promoting art and social responsibility at the same time (through dead sexy limited-edition prints and art pieces like this one).
My favorite non-profit tutoring center, 826LA, has just debuted the second round of its cheeky retro-future Time Travel posters done once again under the talented hand of local artist Amy Martin. If you recognize the look, that’s because you’ve seen them here last year, and they were such a success—$30,000 was made purely in poster sales—that the organization figured it might as well try its luck again. Witty with right-on messages, the 18″ x 24″ frame-ables help keep techno dreamers firmly planted in today’s reality. They’re only $19.99 plus shipping, and are available for pre-order with a ship date of Sept. 14. Way to go for thinking ahead of time!
PTwitty's twitter account. His unleashed optimism are like attitude skittles I munch on throughout the day. So when I saw Matthew Anderson's “Excuses Poster†my gut reaction was to overcome! The poster is a gorgeous info-map guide to battling through all the excuses we tell ourselves. LET'S GO!!!!
Fans of LOST who also happen to be underground art aficionados now have something to spend their time and money (and conspiracy theorizing) on til the TV show returns in 2010. What began as seemingly a prank on the part of comedian Paul Scheer has turned into a full-fledged ARG, where the “A” could just as well stand for “art” as much as “alternative.” Paul’s Damon, Carlton and a Polar Bear painting (see website of same name) was the beginning of a viral campaign containing LOST clues and resulting in a (staged) cease and desist letter from ABC. Now, with the help of Gallery1988, 16 artists are getting in on the action. Initially revealed on Sunday at a Dharma Initiative event with DJ AM and Steve Aoki, but available for purchase beginning today, is Tim Doyle’s take on The Numbers. Each of the 16 prints will be hand-pulled, hand-signed and numbered limited edition screenprints. Tim’s has glow-in-the-dark elements. Check it out before there’s a time shift and they’re all gone at actuallyitsketchup.com.
Star Wars and Full Metal Jacket is like chocolate and peanut butter… Darth Vader and Private Joker's helmet epitomize the duality of man, or “the Jungian thing, Sir.†And even if you aren't picking up on my FMJ reference, you have to admit this is one badass looking poster. This is printed using clear gloss on matte black for the perfect black on black.
Digging Rafa Jenn’s print “You Are Here” map image which is available in a limited edition of 24. Archival ink on archival paper, 20″ x 11.5″ for $39. Great and beautiful work!
Loving some of the new Alternative Motivational Posters above by my Frederic Terral of Right Brain Terrain. Freedom, Believe Yourself, and a handful of others now available. Check them out. Also, if you want to wear the positivity peak at some of his PositiviTees.
While some bands are well connected enough in the music biz to get producers like the Neptunes or Rick Rubin to work on their debut album, Brazilian metal-industrial band Omega Code is more concerned with getting artists like Joshua Davis (pictured here) and Mike Cina. Convinced that a visual element must accompany a true music-listening experience, the group commissioned these guys, plus an enviable crew of other top guns (Si Scott, Motomichi and Dimitre Lima, who has gone on to lush pastures since we introduced him here) to design posters incorporating their logo that will be given out for free when the album launches — which is also free. But that’s not all, folks. Accompanying this mega launch will be a book and DVD published by design mag icon IdN. They’ve opened the floodgates to fans too, encouraging illustrators and designers to submit their ideas for a chance to see their artwork alongside these graphic design gods. The newly extended deadline is March 31. Stay tuned to the band’s website for news on the posters and album release date.
If you feel like your favorite artists have sold out, there are still a select few within the music world who continue to craft an incendiary message. They are known as poster artists, and they are as punk as ever. Died Young, Stayed Pretty, a new film by Eileen Yaghoobian, is a fascinating glance at the cultural insurrection being staged by these flyer rebels. The film features masters like the Ames Brothers, Print Mafia, Art Chantry, Tom Hazelmyer, and several others, offering a behind-the-scenes peek as they plumb the depths of American consumerism, tackle political issues, and make fun of the mainstream while making themselves laugh. For those heading to SXSW, you can catch the film twice at the festival. The first screening is at The Alamo Lamar 3 on March 14th at noon, and the second takes place Austin Convention Center March 18th at 2:00 p.m. Otherwise you’ll have to wait until the film is available on DVD in April.
The Prize: Multimedialist (tis the season to invent labels) Scott Hanson wants to hook you up with an Iso50 Gift Pack that includes a poster and T-shirt from his formidable collection of graphic design work. And while we’re on the subject of Scott, check out his holiday sale, going on as I type.
The Rules: Everyone knows the 12 Days of Christmas song — partridge in a pear tree and whatnot. Well, what about the 12 Days of Chrismukkah? At JS.com we’re a non-denominational holiday shrub kind of group, and we’d like you to give us an example of what you’d give us for one of the days of Chrismukkah. Nine trends a spotting? Seven Macbooks booting? Three golden iPods? One entry per reader. Duplicates will be discarded.
The Deadline: Contest runs now through noon on 12/22.
Tangible Worldwide just opened the virtual doors to their new online shop. If you’ve got love for Chicago or Portland (both fine cities), take a look at some great gocco prints, T-shirts and posters that reflect the civic pride. I may not be from Chi Town, but I’m really digging the Chicago Gocco print. In celebration of the store’s opening, they’re having an introductory/holiday-special sale until January 1st, so this is your chance to pick up a few limited edition pieces at a nice price. You’ll want to keep your eye on these guys, because they’ll be rolling out new designs in the near future.
If Matisyahu’s national tour has already passed through your neighborhood or you’re going to miss him when he comes through, you’d still do well to check out the series of concert posters for him by Hero Design Studio and Boutique. Among the themes are lions, speakers, and all kinds of ill head gear. The series of 38 will be complete upon the end of the tour, when Matisyahu will hit his hometown of New York with eight shows in two boroughs (four shows at Webster Hall and four shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg). You can pick up individual posters once it’s all wrapped up.
Smells like teen … inspiration! Our young friend Ethan Bodnar has come out with a new series of posters calling for social change in the most typographically literal way possible. The 11 x 17Â “This Is Backwards” series has a couple of motivational statements in, of course, backwards facing font. Wrong-headed ideas, like sitting on your ass all the time or going grocery shopping without a reusable bag, are spelled out against variations of solid blue. Clever. Just don’t hang them in front of mirror — or you’ll be getting the wrong message.
Whether you’ve just moved into a new place or you’re looking to spruce up the one you lived in for awhile, odds are you could do with some properly artful decorations. We recommend checking out the astonishing array of wall art at the Design Supremo web store, where they’ve just released a multitude of brand new prints that might help brighten up your bedroom or make your living room more lively. Three designs in particular have captured our fancy: Love Will Never Tear Us Apart is an intricately crafted typographical poster by plusminus (Peter Cmokrak) that maps out the more than 85 cover versions of the Joy Division song; Erica Donovan’s 20 Useful Knots reminds us just what we missed by deciding against a stint in the cub scouts; and the Big Breakfast poster can fit conveniently in your kitchen so that anyone you cook breakfast for knows just what you expect in return. Beyond on that we encourage you to plenty more where those came from.
As you collegiate types head back to school you’d definitely be wise to drum up some dope new posters to decorate your dorm room walls. Heck, even if you’re not in college you could probably use a few splendid images to spruce up your wall space. We recommend checking out the first series of A3 sized posters from Changethethought. The array of lush pop art images from Chris Cox are printed in sets of 100 on 100 lb True White Paper and are individually signed and numbered. They present a vivid visual feast that will show anyone entering your domain that your taste is undeniable when it comes to art. Head over to the Changethethought online store.
