Wallpaper’s just launched a new interactive portion of their website which aims to catalogue and document a selection of products their editorial staff likes. They’re adding new items to it regularly so I’m sure it’ll come to be useful, or at least inspirational. Great selection of goodies which are browsable by room or product. Check it out.

Attention Philadelphia! If your penchant for brotherly love has recently morphed into a desire for designer-ly delights; don’t despair, you’re still in the right city. A sterling opportunity to quench that fresh thirst, although briefly, has presented itself in the form of a wondrous pop up shop courtesy of the fine folks (and our friends) at Oh Joy! and URBN. Indulge yourself in a fine array of precious paper and print goods that are sure to be a compliment to even the shoddiest of penmanship. The whole shebang kicks off tomorrow, July 9th, at 11:30 at URBN Building 543 on 5000 S. Broad Street on the Urban Outfitter’s campus and lasts a scant three hours ’til the clock strikes 2:30. Plan accordingly and don’t miss out, because shops don’t just pop-up out of the ground like this too often.

Amidst the dead-til-friday strip of bars in Philadelphia’s Old City, one store front boosts its allure with searing pink. Smak Parlour is the brainchild of Abby and Katie, two Philly girls whose aptitude for design brought to life their vision of girliness. The duo claims they found inspiration from the old school Barbie wardrobe; not hard to believe when you walk into Smak Parlour. In a domain of pink, a pallet of gaudy flare is harnessed to create designs that embody the Abby and Katie’s expertise, self-professed as all things vintage-inspired, girly, fun and flirty. Smak Parlour is at 2nd and Market Streets in Philly.

Reusable bags. I want to use (and reuse) my reusable bags, but I always forget them at home. I love how many of them I see around lately though. I don’t carry a purse so carrying it around is a little tricky, but maybe I just need to get over that and carry it with pride. Flip and Tumble is a new (and I know, another) maker of Reusable Bags– and these ones look really awesome. Unlike Baggu (which we still love), the Flip and Tumble bags have a small little compartment to pack the bag back into sewn/built inside the bag, so you’ll never lose the little carrier. The bags are available in nearly a dozen colors and cost $9 if you buy 1-2, $8 if you buy 3-6 and $7 a pop if you buy more than 7. I say, Buy 7 and gift to your friends or family and help rid the world of plastic bags.

I popped into GOODFOOT Vancouver while exploring Gas Town today. Very spiffy looking space with a nice selection of the usual goods. Living in NYC certainly makes me spoiled but I found the selection to be pretty tasteful here. Some quick-strike Nike’s, Visvim, as well as a few very good looking Ransom pieces. If you’re in town it’s certainly worth the visit.

Comics meet couture in a clever mashup at Barney’s New York. This display for fashion designer Azzedine Alaia repurposes two mannequins as the iconic black and white spies from Mad’s long-running comic, Spy vs. Spy. Barney’s is known for its great windows, but the innovative aesthetics continue inside the department store, too. We love it!

Designers Shipley & Halmos are down at New York’s Den, a venue for various designers’ pop-up stores — and why aren’t you down there now? The entire fall collection is available, showcased in a setting styled after Robert Wiene’s 1921 Expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which will be projected along with a Shipley & Halmos animated short. The collection features the signature conservative style of the former Trovata designers, with just a touch of wild side. It will be running until the end of November.

When we travel we like to pack light to make room for shopping. When I was in Prague last week I made sure to make my rounds to see some of the Czech fashion. We admit the shop Kebab doesn’t have the most appetizing of names, especially for clothes, the shop does have some great indie fashion brands (nice to see some SupremeBeing) and local Czech clothing all representing a really young and energetic style. The shop is downtown but a couple blocks from the tourist high street shops just to keep its street cred. Have a look at the clothes and mingle with some of the young hip Czechsters.

You know that person: the one who, all of a sudden, decides to pack in all their worldly possessions and move across the world in order to find that certain something missing in their lives. There’s a lot of love for this person because, most times, they have some really great stuff they end up just giving away to their friends, who then accept bucketloads of compliments for the art they actually didn’t spend the time picking out or paying for.
(Friends in New York and L.A. who recently benefited from the liquidation of my personal collection: you’re welcome.)
Having taken up residence in Sydney last week, I was lamenting my blank walls and making plans to remedy this situation. Coming across The Art Traders was both a revelation and a kick in the guts at the same time. Curating a Southern Hemisphere art collection will be a piece of cake from here on out, but it also has me wishing I didn’t just gift my Yoshitomo Nara sketches away. Yolande Gray and Fiona McIntosh sell the art of Sydneysiders’ on consignment and have compiled a fantastic assortment of contemporary and Aboriginal art, spanning all pricepoints and tastebuds. Check them out online at The Art Traders, or visit them in Sydney at 134 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst.

Paper or plastic? Whatever you choose, the bags are inevitably getting tossed in the garbage. The fashionably eco-conscious minds at Ameico think it’s time you and everyone else got a brand new bag — or two. Their line of TwoBag vinyl shopping bags (available at Velocity Art and Design) give shoppers an alternative to wasting valuable resources. The unique design includes an outer bag that shuts completely with the help of a pair of hooks, and an inner bag that secures with a double hand grip. Plus it’s vinyl, so you don’t have to worry about the bottom falling out and dumping your month supply of Hungry Man dinners all over the floor. Not that that’s happened to us.

I’ve been collecting the frequent flyer miles, and right now I’m in Rome for the next week (for the first time). I’m here because on Thursday I’m speaking at the TTI/Vanguard conference about the future of the social web, this new group of humans called Born Digitals, etc. The speaker lineup is pretty great, and I’m humbled to be here. But, like any good globe trotter, I’ve got some time to burn this trip (by design), and I have planned, wait for it, yep– nothing. Why would I come to Rome with nothing planned? Well, I figured a few of my faithful readers have been here and can lend a hand in recommendations. Where should I eat? What should I visit (other than the obvious city attractions?) Where should I shop? Who wants to get gelato with me? Drop me a note or leave a comment below. Ciao!

To say we’re a fan of sweet kicks would be an understatement, so we felt compelled to heed the call of “Sneaker Lovers Unite!” when we heard about the Sneaker Lover Pop-Up Shop being held at the Laforet store in the Harajuku section of Tokyo from April 21st to May 6th. While we didn’t immediately book a flight to Tokyo to check it out for ourselves we decided we’d do the next best thing and let you, the readers know about the sensational sneaker display. The store is a promotion being held by the KIKSTYO International Web Shop decorated with images of famed Japanese bikini pinup Aki Hoshino in sultry poses with sneakers as photographed by YONE. The shop itself will be selling exclusive collaborations with well known brands such as Champion, New Balance, and G-Shock, along with limited edition T-shirt with one of Yone’s aforementioned images of the bikini clad bombshell. If you find yourself in Tokyo, we recommend wandering over to the Sneaker Lover Pop Up Shop and show your love for your favorite fancy footwear…and if you’re so compelled pick us up a pair of something nice.

Today is officially Earth Day, and while many companies will aim to show off how they’ve gone green for one shining moment in April, others are keen to the fact that earth day is not just on April 22nd, but every day and as such aim to make it a part of their every day existence. You can count Fashion boutique Fred Segal amongst the latter category. The Santa Monica-based winner of the LA Fashion Retailer of the year award is going green in a big way; their new home and lifestyle store, Fred Segal Green, conveniently located just down the road from their flagship store, features one of a kind products that are not only built for sustainability but also embrace the eco-friendly lifestyle. The store offers products ranging from bowls to benches, and plenty of other creations from accomplished designers from around the world, many of which are not available anywhere else. So if you fancy yourself eco-friendly and you’re a fan of well designed home wares, Fred Segal Green is the place to be this Earth Day and each day thereafter.
