Sinclair Scott Smith has taken quite the view of the tool industry with his Master’s program project Capital Tool Co. The project adheres to Sinclair’s academic specialization, which is to explore social representation in the field of industrial design. Capital Tool Co. is based on the premise that the U.S. market for tools is segmented to the point that there are really two distinctive groups of people buying hammers, pliers, tape measures, and the like — professionals and homeowners — and Sinclair has carved out a spot in the market for fashionable, pricey tools for people who seldom use them. When you visit Sinclair’s website, you can flip through his project pages to see in more depth how he analyzed the Capital Tool project– interesting stuff.

I don’t consider myself ‘metrosexual’ (at least compared to a lot of men out there), but I do take care of my body. Tweezerman products have helped me do just that for years, and I wanted to spread the word to those of you who haven’t tried their products. For a great ’stocking stuffer’ idea, I reccommend the Deluxe Grooming Kit. This kit has all the essentials: a nail clipper, pocket nail file, nose hair scissors, and a stainless steel point tweezerette, and for $20, you can’t beat the price. Tweezerman is all about quality — you’ll realize that when you use their products — but most people don’t know that the company (25 years old I might add) is also a model for social and environmental responsibility. Tweezerman makes significant contributions to charities, and is even a signatory to the UN Global Compact. Tweezerman is sold in many stores, and can be purchased online here.

When I go to buy someone a gift for the holidays, I always want to — at the very least — get them something that they can use; the Celine Dion CD just isn’t cutting it anymore. I found this Multi-Tool gadget bundle from Swiss-Tech to be a great gift solution. It has a detachable LED light (always good to have), and the tool itself is small, yet packed with utility. It’s stainless steel and pocket-friendly (no sharp edges), and has the essentials like pliers with posi-grip jaws, 4 screwdrivers, wire cutters. It is priced right where I like, at under $20, and you don’t have to worry about quality issues because Swiss-Tech has built a reputation as the ‘first in key ring products.’ Also check out their Bodygard Emergency Tool, which combines an automatic glass breaker, seat belt cutter, sonic alarm, LED light, and an emergency flasher in a pocket sized, potentially lifesaving unit.

Ever wonder what types of things you talk about with your various email buddies? Or how your email conversations differ with each? Themail is a new tool (unfortunately PC only) that visualizes the contents of your email archive. Each column represents a month of email exchanged with a selected person. The more unique the word is, the larger it appears. Maybe if we send enough visitors over to the MIT student project, they’ll create a Mac OS X version– it looks really neat. Via Future Feeder
