QR “Built Code” using Frisk mints in Japan.  Check it out.

SET is now promoting the use of what we call “built” codes. We believe that these codes offer brands a unique opportunity to connect the real world to the online world. In the coming months we will be looking to incorporate these “built” codes not only into print media but also into outdoor stunts and events that allow the consumer to truly interact with the code in fun and exciting ways.

The future has arrived. Muji and Lego. My friend Kohei talks about it here.

Muji & Lego recently released a joint product that consists of a box of Lego pieces that also comes with sheets of paper — with a particular hole-punch (not included), the paper and Legos can be combined into some cute creations.

This is wild (or wildly awesome). Via Jeff Staple

In 1943, five years after it was founded and during the height of World War II, Walt Disney Studios put out an organization chart to explain how the company functioned. What’s fascinating is how it differs from org charts issued by most corporations.

Absolutely fantastic. Every month this guy’s mom takes your old knitted garment and turns it into something new. Sustainable clothing, it’s called Reknit.

For January she’s turning your old sweaters into scarves. They’re available in 2 styles and are $30 each.

The note is great: If your sweater contains only one color, a complementing color will be picked & used for the stripes by my mom.

Back in August some friends at Aston Martin and Gotham Dream Cars hooked me up with a brand new DB9 for the weekend (Thanks again guys!). I originally intended to write a blow by blow story of my experience but every time I put pen to paper I got nowhere but one single word.  Perfection.  Driving the DB9 was an absolute pleasure.

Fantastic pictures courtesy of my brother Micah Spear.

Rather than a narrative, I’ll share a couple things I’ll never forget:

  • The attention to detail inside these cars is incredible. No corner, crevice or surface was left without excruciating attention to the detail. Stitching, beautiful woods, fabrics, and so on.  The craftsmanship was just gorgeous.  I guess that’s what being hand built gets you.
  • There is no open road in New England that can handle this car.  It’s built for speed. There was no straight away long enough, no hill windy enough.  You need a race track or the European countryside to truly enjoy what’s under the hood.  We did our best though. Promise.
  • Low clearance.  Low clearance.  I repeat, low clearance. Everywhere I went I was afraid I was going to scuff up the front lip.  I didn’t!
  • I need to get me one of these.  Unquestionably a dream car.

What a treat. On with the pictures!

Last night (and early into the morning today) Quirky got crazy and developed a green product in 24 hours. What they came up with is called Petal Drops, a flower shaped funnel that fits on top of standard threaded water/soda bottles providing you with a chance to elegantly and easily capture rain water to water your plants. $4.50 and it’s yours!

Full Disclosure (Hat tip FTC): I’m an advisor to and shareholder in Quirky, inc.

My friend David is sailing from Los Angeles to Sydney on a boat he calls the Plastiki made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. What a nut case, right? I had agreed to go with him until I went on some sailing lessons and remembered how terribly (read: deathly) ill I get at sea.

Now I don’t even have to leave my bathtub to sail with this new toy Plastiki version though. Just in time for the holidays!

It’s made from cardboard approved by the Forest Stewardship council and printed with vegetable inks. Half the proceeds go to Sculpt the Future. The other half gets pooled into a life insurance fund for David. Only kidding.

Go read more about the Plastiki Expedition. And buy the toy. Awesome.

Easily some of the most unsettling photographs I’ve seen in a very long time– but oddly important to spread around. Artist and photographer Chris Jordan always nails the point.

These photographs of albatross chicks were made just a few weeks ago on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.
To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world’s most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.

This is sickening. Something needs to be done about dumping in the oceans. Via QBN

Want to buy American and support your nation (if you live here)? Check out The American List. This is a great resource and I hope it continues to grow!

There are many Made in the USA lists throughout the internet, nearly all of them tacky and in poor taste. These awful websites have led me to compile a list of stylish and cool brands that make their goods in America. One of my goals with this is to make it easier to locate and buy domestically produced apparel products. Another motivating factor is my desire for things Made in the USA to be embraced by a younger, more stylish consumer.
