Quirky's Petal Drops

Render-3.jpeg

Last night (and early into the morning today) Quirky got crazy and developed a green product in 24 hours. What they came up with is called Petal Drops, a flower shaped funnel that fits on top of standard threaded water/soda bottles providing you with a chance to elegantly and easily capture rain water to water your plants. $4.50 and it’s yours!

Full Disclosure (Hat tip FTC): I’m an advisor to and shareholder in Quirky, inc.

The Plastiki Expedition Toy

My friend David is sailing from Los Angeles to Sydney on a boat he calls the Plastiki made entirely of recycled plastic bottles. What a nut case, right? I had agreed to go with him until I went on some sailing lessons and remembered how terribly (read: deathly) ill I get at sea.

Now I don’t even have to leave my bathtub to sail with this new toy Plastiki version though. Just in time for the holidays!

It’s made from cardboard approved by the Forest Stewardship council and printed with vegetable inks. Half the proceeds go to Sculpt the Future. The other half gets pooled into a life insurance fund for David. Only kidding.

Go read more about the Plastiki Expedition. And buy the toy. Awesome.

What do birds eat? Well, human trash.

1255628127.jpg

Easily some of the most unsettling photographs I’ve seen in a very long time– but oddly important to spread around. Artist and photographer Chris Jordan always nails the point.

These photographs of albatross chicks were made just a few weeks ago on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.
To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world’s most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.

This is sickening. Something needs to be done about dumping in the oceans. Via QBN

Want to buy American?

Want to buy American and support your nation (if you live here)? Check out The American List. This is a great resource and I hope it continues to grow!

There are many Made in the USA lists throughout the internet, nearly all of them tacky and in poor taste. These awful websites have led me to compile a list of stylish and cool brands that make their goods in America. One of my goals with this is to make it easier to locate and buy domestically produced apparel products. Another motivating factor is my desire for things Made in the USA to be embraced by a younger, more stylish consumer.

POLLanski

Another Ji Lee production!

The recent arrest of Roman Polanski for the rape of a 13 year old girl in 1977 has caused much debate around the world.

On one side, Polanski’s defenders argue he should be freed immediately because the case is too old. On the other side, Polanski’s non-sympathizers argue he should be tried just like any other sex offenders regardless of how old the case is.
