Not only is Malaquias Montoya an extermely talented illustrator, painter, and silk screen printer–but he is a courageous man providing a voice for the voiceless. He says his work depicts honesty and promotes an attitude towards existing reality; a confrontational attitude, one of change rather than adaptability. His work is in attempt to communicate the silent and often ignored Chicano culture in Central America. He speaks through his art, and his messages show the pain and struggle his people face. He says, “We must not fall into the age-old cliche that the artist is always ahead of his/her time. No, it is most urgent that we be on time.”
