Andy Jenkins, Andy Mueller, Tony Larson and the rest of the inimitable design crew at Girl Skateboards’ Art Dump are having a good ol’ fashioned zine swap. If you send in a zine of your own making, they’ll snail mail you a 32 pager they put together, silkscreened cover and all. This is probably the cheapest way you’ll ever get your hands on art from some of the most worshipped names in skateboard and clothing graphics, so get photocopying! Check the link above for the address and a peek at what you’ll get.

When it comes to the clothing appetite of my male friends, they tell me they’re happy just subsisting on tees, a choice I don’t dog but envy. Most dudes will never have to encounter the aggravating situation of fighting with a tube top that refuses to stay up…but then again, we girls don’t have to deal with having the choice between only pants or shorts, so I guess we’re even. However, I’m so pumped on You Are So Last Year’s fall update showing recent designs of commissioned retro tees that I’m finding good reason to buy and alter them to fit me (you can’t get more ’80s than a tube top!). They’re new rave-ish, full of Bigfoot-sized images dripping with juicy lips, crawling with a fresh leopard print or flaunting ghoulish, pulp-fiction freakouts. There’s even a bright purple shirt done for Johnny Cupcakes of a pink dinosaur riding a skateboard that I swear someone in my 2nd grade class had. YASLY is actually the online portfolio of one guy, Danny Jones, who shows off samples of type and print work he did for clients like Reef and Adio alongside the apparel selections, which are worth a gander. But back to the shirts — you’ll have to hit up each featured brand’s site separately to hunt these mack daddies down.

Spear Collective member and personal favorite Grant Barnhart recently released a short-run print edition of one of his latest paintings, Horse(y) 1964. As part of Grant’s latest set of work (which will be shown at OKOK in early November- we’ll fill you in on all the details soon), Horse(y) 1964 demonstrates his newly-intensified color palate (and what seems like newly-intensified political messages). The print has been released in a series of 65 signed and numbered copies, but I’m struggling to find the print’s dimensions/further information on the printing method/paper used/etc. However, Grant is a terribly friendly guy, so should you care to know the answers to those questions, feel free to drop him an inquiry.

57 Even, is killing it. At only 24 years old, the young designer specializes in logo, brand, web, print and publication design, as well as a fine arts combination of sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking. Clients like Loreal Paris, Harley Davidson, and Obey Clothing highlight his long list of work, which he began building after landing his first freelance project at the age of 16. Like many successful designers his age, 57 Even has strong connections within the skateboarding, snowboarding and BMX industries, and uses much of his creativity to effectively communicate with the young demographic of those lifestyles. His style and talent are diverse, but his true skills seem to lie in his knowledge of creative mediums and his understanding of the audience his clients want the attention of. You can hunt through Steven’s bright portfolio here, or get to know him on Behance.

This type of green design blows my mind. Online design mag de zeen has a story about designer Greetje van Tiem who has managed to created usable yarn created from newspapers. And better still, Tiem has managed to get 20 meters per PAGE out of the substance!

The article has pictures demonstrating the yarn used to make floor mats, hanging drapes, and even what appears to be a stool. And, if you look closely, you can still pick up bits and pieces of information and color from the original page, creating an odd mosaic of colors and whites. She calls the project “Indruk”, but unfortunately I can’t read her portfolio page to share more information.

It certainly has a unique look that I could see fitting in very well in some of the more modern homes that have cropped up lately, and, of course, it would make the perfect addition to a green home. Hopefully its use will take off!
