There’s some innate humor in the pairing of the name “Richard Goodall” and the word “Underground.” I don’t mean this snarkily; I mean this from the same perspective that seemingly drove the online shop’s font choice (Don’t you think we should make it feel a little more gangsta?). However, there is nothing innately humorous about the shop (slash gallery; Richard Goodall Underground and Richard Goodall Contemporary are two of the UK’s leading art spaces), which, to my shock and bliss, stocks about a 18,000 posters, art toys, skate decks, books, magazines, tee shirts, and everything else. That number is slightly salted with exaggeration — but in my defense — what use is reality when reality is 1,742 posters? Aside from representing many of today’s best underground talent, the shop is the only place I’ve ever found five Kings of Leon concert posters at once — including one from their December of 2003 show with Ben Kweller (signed by the artist, Dennis Loren/selling for five pounds/beautiful). It’s sort of like Wal-Mart, except filled with tons of glorious magic instead of ex-Disney Channel-ers Christmas albums. I feel lame for not knowing about this sooner (that’s my disclaimer, sassy readers), so save yourself the same fate and scope the grounds before your friends do.

Our arty pal (and Spear Collective member) Grant Barnhart has another opening around the bend, this time in his Seattle hometown. “Exact Change,” Grants latest body of work, was built on inspiration from the work of American artist Robert Rauschenberg. The series of paintings, again created in Grant’s classic mediums of oil and graphite, reflects the removal of self, and mocks and acknowledges the sexual perversity inherent in organized violence. While the conceptual drive behind “Exact Change” is easily discernible, the first thing one might notice in the recent paintings is the evolution of Grant’s personal style — bright colors have replaced bits of his muted palate; new shapes and forms have taken some of the room that his familiar animals used to fill; and, above all, his aptitude for story-telling has fully developed into a point of great personal strength. “Exact Change” will run through the first of January, with an opening reception at OKOK this Saturday, November 10th, from 6-10 o’clock.

This silver Walkman tape player pendant and necklace from Complete Technique is the hottest thing ever. Look at that craftsmanship. Look at the meticulous detail, down to the cassette inside. My heart is skipping! It’s only one model from the jewelry company headed by two partners in New York — one of which has a background in making fine jewelry and the other in marketing — who focus their designs mostly on the hip-hop set, with names like Mos Def, ?uestlove, Jazzy Jeff and DJ Krush among their fans. Bling is their game, but anyone who lives through music will gobble up these masterpieces if they’ve got the pretty penny to drop. Complete Technique also makes speakers studded with zirconium, 45 adapters, head phones that move, ’80s Japanese boomboxes plated in 18K gold and other customized jewelry, all equally sizzling and worth the arm and leg. If you’re interested, check out the in-depth interview Format Magazine did with their marketing director Jenn Tsang earlier this year to hear the theory behind the brand.

Hot on the heels of Jessica Nebel’s Pixel It poster comes the next step in the mass-customization game. Again, the kids over at Design Spotter are all over it. Designer Jeni Rodgers has taken the usual brown, scruffy welcome mat and turned it into a fully customizable experience for everyone who enters your home.

Her Welcome Mat uses a variety of fonts on interchangeable tiles to create endless possibilities of what can be said to your guests. Anything from a simple “hello” to a more direct “get the @#$% off my porch” becomes a possibility with just a couple minutes worth of work. Not much info on pricing or production, but we’ve already sent off a “hello” to Jeni and we’ll see what she says.

What’s that you say, you’ve made the complete switch from vinyl to digital with your music collection but something is missing. Maybe it’s your soul… or perhaps you’re feeling the void left by the lack of album art. What if we told you you could have your precious vinyl back complete with album art and no pesky, bulky, record player? With “Sound” a collaboration between Visionaire and MINI, the album is the art…The 4,000 limited edition case issue contains five vinyls, imprinted with customized images and 100 minutes of audio, from unreleased songs to spoken word recordings. The albums feature music from artists like U2 and Courtney Love and boasts design work from such luminaries as Karl Lagerfeld and Alexander McQueen…but that’s not all.

You won’t have to go to the attic and get out your old Technics turntable because the records come with their very own player in the form of a little MINI Clubman car. That’s right a little miniature battery operated car drives around the record to act as both the player and the sound system. If that doesn’t give new meaning to getting into the groove then I don’t know what does. However, If you can’t see yourself carrying around vinyl everywhere the cases will also contain CD editions of all the audio because you can’t really listen to vinyl on the run.

There’s something about bearded men, and I should know…I have a beard…and I’m a man. St. Louis-based Artist Ashley Goldberg must share this sentiment because she certainly seems fascinated with them enough to make them the subject of many of her darling designs…If you’re into collecting prints of dudes with face fuzz, we’d suggest heading to her Etsy Shop to purchase one or possibly more of these adorable images. Even if Chin bristles aren’t your thing there’s a plethora of precious pictures that Ms. Goldberg has churned out for your visual enjoyment and monetary patronage, all of which possess a certain simplicity and childlike innocence making for an admirable addition to anyone’s art collection.
