I’ve heard that “green is the new black” a lot recently–but it looks like for Porsche Design, white is the new black. A technical, clean look for summer seems to be Porsche Design’s story this spring. Their new White Collection will hit stores in May, and is comprised of a pretty diverse smattering of products, all clad in clean white costume. All of the ‘anti-color’ will be accompanied by both shiny and brushed aspects of aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel (pictured here, from left: P’9521 Cell Phone, P’1140 Jacket, P’3140 Shakepen, and P’3635 Lighter). A bold look for the summer season — I must say — the White Collection isn’t all about aesthetics; the PD’s black version of the mobile phone, for instance, has already won a bunch of design awards, employing a fingerprint sensor for user identification, and the Shakepen is activated by a nifty ’shake of the wrist’ mechanism. I’d also like to see what kind of white flame that lighter produces–think they’ve nailed down that white fire technology yet?

Art Directors Pier Madonia (UK) and Stuart Macmillan (Montreal) teamed up with photographer Roger Stayte and created a rather captivating print campaign for the International Red Cross. Prescribing the values of “awareness,” “compassion,” and “tolerance” was achieved through some pretty literal imagery. And, if you want more edge, check out what Pier and Stuart did for Blavod Black Vodka.

While older Rock & Roll souls R.E.M. and Portishead prepare to drop new tunes on a clamoring public, we’ve kind of got a hankering for some seriously classic tunes from a newer talent. No we’re not talking about Beirut covering Jimi Hendrix; we’re referring to 21 year-old Cellist Peter Gregson. On April 25th at 7:30pm Scotland time, the Edinburgh string-smith will be performing “Spem in Alium”, a 40 part vocal motet, as well as 5 newly commissioned pieces at a show in Greyfriars Kirk being broadcast live over the Internet. We know internet concerts are nothing new but this performance is sure to be something special as it will be sponsored by Fujitsu Ten’s Eclipse speakers and will be performed in eight speaker surround sound over Spemcast, the special site set up by Gregson. If you set up your speakers just right, you’re sure to get the 15th Century concert experience. We just hope that doesn’t come with another 15th Century experience known as the black plague.

It takes a tough man to live Down Under…what with all of those poisonous animals, arid Outback, and the possibility of Paul Hogan at every turn. Which is probably why they make some damn fine denim. The Imperial Denim label hails from the country of murderous ex-pat criminals (writer’s note: sincere apologies to our staff Aussie Heather). The mantastic styles, made of Japanese dry weight selvage, come in a few different offerings: Duke, King, and the nod to hard working sheep farmers–Shearer. If this press release is to be believed (and they most always are) you can wear these pants an entire year without them disintegrating on you. We wonder if they make underwear? Maybe you’re not exactly a starving artist, but a rather malnourished one with all of the top ramen you inhale on a daily basis. The fact of the matter is, being an artist is a tough gig and the money doesn’t always flow in regularly. While the people at POVevolving may not be able to stop all artists from existing solely on noodles, the LA based gallery fine art printing company, is at least attempting to alleviate the financial burden of a few artists with their POVeditions project. The recently launched curatorial undertaking involves the seemingly random release of some stunning limited edition fine prints each month from their stable of works from artists such as Alika Cooper and Mel Kadel. Ten percent of each print sold on POVeditions will then be put towards the company’s Artist Endowment Fund. The money stored in said fund will then be used to give grants to artists that may not have enough cash to make their ideas a reality. If you’re wondering how you might get your hands on some of that fundage…well, once or twice a year POVevolving puts out an open call for proposals. So we recommend keeping your ear to the ground and your eyes on their website.

While some of us play our records, others play with them in a completely different way. After coming across dishes made from molded, reappropriated LPs on the Internet, Carol Furlan and her partner at Ideia & Companhia stopped at the used record store, picked up a bunch that were attracting dust and made ‘em into these neat wall pieces. The duo won’t cite any rhyme or reason to which shapes they put under the laser cutting knife, but they do say they could care less whether they’re slicing into a Barry Manilow Greatest Hits album or Chicago record — it’s the color of the vinyl label they care about. Contact them directly through their site if you’re interested in ordering one.

We probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but you seem trustworthy enough that you won’t go blabbing it all over town: we know a way you can get up to $525 in free gift certificates for some super awesome t-shirts from Threadless. That’s right we said free! During the month of April the kind yet covert folks at TCritic are giving away twenty one $25 gift certificates to one of our favorite shirt sources. So how do you get your hands on one? That’s easy. All you have to do is look for the secret word contained in one of TCritic’s blog posts each day and be the first to comment using said secret word. If it were any easier, they’d just give you the money…but contests are much more fun.
