Your Virgin Big Brother is watching. No, not Jeff (although you may want to add a second lock on your bedroom door). The Virgin Eye is a new interactive way for you (and more importantly Richard Branson) to keep an eye on everyone who’s talking about Virgin stakes around the world. From Virgin Atlantic, to Virgin Healthcare, to Virgin Online Dating Service, keywords are aggregated as links in a Milky Way of Web chatter, all scanned by a Dr. Evil-like “laser.” It looks hot, but methinks it smells a bit of the Spectra razzle dazzle.

There’s no question that Harrison Ford has played two of the greatest roles in film history. While we might have our own personal reasons as to why we think Indiana Jones is much cooler than Han Solo, no one’s ever really qualified their abilities to answer the burning question, “who would come out on top of this character conflict if they ever met in a dark alley?” Unfortunately, this query has been left hanging up in the air for a generation of nerds to ponder … until now. Thanks to the hard work of Jake Kalish, a freelance writer and humorist who’s work has appeared in Details and Men’s Fitness, we now have some idea who would win this epic battle. In his new book Santa vs. Satan: The Official Compendium of Imaginary Fights, Kalish pits some of the most revered names in history and pop culture in a series of Icono-clashes and manages to crown winners with the assistance of expert analysts, martial arts masters, scientists, social theorists, and pop-culture philosophers. So if you’re the type who’s ever argued that Gandalf could overpower Obi-Wan, you finally have your definitive answer … sort of.

Hope you don’t mind if I share something personal. I just got back from my honeymoon in Napa (no, I will not be posting photos), and of all of the tasting rooms, wine shops, and California cuisine restaurants, my best glass of juice was at Titus Vineyards. It wasn’t just the fact that I’d already blazed three dozen wineries up the Silverado Trail in my rented Mustang, like an oenophile Dr. Gonzo. This transcended my buzz (which, if you’re a CHiP officer, is pure hyperbole). This small label makes gigantic reds that are smooth but full of personality; a nice Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and a Zinfandel that will deftly remove your underwear and refuse to call the next day. I bought everything, including a Petite Verdot and Petite Sirah varietal you don’t see a lot of in the valley. If you don’t just drink, but actually enjoy wine, you won’t be disappointed.

The popularization of the mind/body/soul lifestyle has brought about a few good changes — the most important being a proliferation of healthier people. But those of us who have been there since the beginning know that it hasn’t always been as easy to jibe with. In fact, even if you are among the newest of followers, you probably already have some experience sifting through the occasional dose of power-hippy, (i.e., things that are a little too all-or-nothing to meld into our individual paths). Thankfully, there is a new approach to conscious living that is rapidly gaining momentum, and it has more to do with the pursuit of happiness than the perfect patchouli. A great example of this progressive mindset can be found in BeThree, an online lifestyle community that is using its message of an energized existence to put the hip in hippy.

The premise of BeThree is simple: spread the gospel of all things fresh for the mind, body and soul. Geared towards women, the daily publication aims to share the most exciting, relevant and uncut truths about today’s health-conscious lifestyle, and aims to do it in the most mod way possible. Delivered in a voice that is engaging, inspiring, and most importantly, realistic, BeThree takes living consciously to a level that is more worldly than new agey. In other words, while the site may cover ways to incorporate more healthy herbs in your life, it won’t coach you through bombing your home with a fistful of burning sage. As an extra perk, the contributors to this site have been at The New York Times, Delicious Living, and Rock and Ice, insuring that the content is coming from the mouths of people who are not only health-savvy, but also rather adept at sentence formation. Die Gestalten just dropped a sneak peek of the new book by Stephan Doitschinoff — aka Calma, a Brazilian artist we turned you onto last month — titled Calma: The Art of Stephen Doitschinoff (landing in bookstores this September). The beautifully designed hardcover will feature 144 full-color pages of his paintings, which mix old Afro-Brazilian tales and religious iconography in a street style. In between his pieces are reflections of those who’ve encountered his work, such as Graffiti Brasil author Tristan Manco. More previews on the DGV site.
