If everything goes the way the polls are saying, tomorrow night’s Democratic Party Election Night Celebration in Los Angeles will not only be round of hi-fives for the hard work that went into getting the apathetic behind Obama, but also a mark of success for an underground movement that helped get him elected for the important post. Shepard Fairey, who created posters of the candidate, will be DJing alongside other prominent Obama supporter Z-Trip. The star-studded event will feature guests like California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, as well as non-politicians like Sarah Silverman and Zooey Deschanel. It’s a party that no doubt will be memorable, especially the very second when the next president is announced. I can hear the resounding roars of happiness already. The party’s free—just RSVP here, and be ready to celebrate.
Kat Nouri brings us simple, attractive home items with versatility. Modern-twist features the products of Nouri’s collaborations with several Bay Area designers. The result is a collection of functional bits with multiple uses that come in patterns sure to class up your home. Our favorite example is the Vinotagz; little markers to place around the stem of your wine glass so you don’t lose it among the others at a party, which can also be used as napkin rings.
Rick Sommerfeld (the3rdspace) and Rob Pyatt are no newbies when it comes to turning a humble abode from the mid 20th century into a 21st century work of art. Their latest project Pinon House, is yet another tribute to fine form in modern architecture. The design duo gave an unassuming Boulder, Colorado habitat a major overhaul via some serious remodeling and add-ons. The result shows off their knack for turning the seemingly simple into an appealing wonderland of geometry and practical living space.

For those of you who enjoyed the twisted, definitely-a-walk-on-the-dark-side work of Fourth Letter we wrote about here, this artist with a penchant for blood has updated his site with new sinister goodness. Recent works are now more prominently displayed; the one that got me is the drippy “Death Seeps In, Bloody, Dirty, and Colorful” that was made in oil, walnut ink and watercolor. Halloween’s over, but Fourth Letter apparently enjoys living it every day.
After focusing his lens on the American media’s coverage of the Iraq war, Dutch documentarian Kasper Verkaik has diaried a six month journey around the U.S., talking to individuals who don’t exercise their right to vote as well as young voters and new citizens who will cast ballots for the first time this year. The Dear Oprah journey takes the form of video entries addressed to Ms. Winfrey, exploring why approximately one third of the US population doesn’t vote and what would happen if they did. The result is an enjoyable series of snapshots of interviews in a South Carolina barbershop, Dallas Cowboys stadium, and of course, Nevada It’s a perfect topic for the distribution platform Submarine Channel’s episodic Minimovies format, which include eight or so short film clips that tell a narrative. Verkaik has certainly picked a rich one.
