We love our readers, we really do. But sometimes the things you guys come up with make us wonder who the hell you are. Take for instance Devin McGrath. Devin has an online portfolio for his artwork and asked if we could take a look. We did, and holy-unicorn-bloodbath there were some freaky images. We would be scared if they weren’t amazing works. It’s like space-fantasy-violence-meets-David-Lynch artwork. Each image comes with its own world, where the laws of Earth don’t apply. Definitely much better work than those elephants trained to hold a paintbrush (see: bio). He has a selection of prints up for sale, but hasn’t quite set up his store yet. Although you can email him, and I’m sure he would be glad to sell you anything you can dream up … and probably a lot of things you can’t.

We’ve gone gaga over Y-3’s limited edition kicks in the past, and now we have something to look forward to. The video that goes along with the Spring/Summer ‘09 campaign for Y-3 depicts kids hiding from surveillance cameras with the aid of their dynamic sneaks, giving us the sneakiest of previews. However, the entire collection is available for viewing at the adidas site. Navigate through the grid to see every show and clothing item coming out. The Y-3 collection has a classic sensibility, but these definitely aren’t your parents’ Superstars.

As South by Southwest is gearing up, we wanted to let you know about a gem of a band that will be there. Balmorhea is something of a classical arrangement of cello, violin, guitar, and piano that creates an amazing landscape. It’s the type of lyricless music I listen to while I work, but can still get caught up in. All is Wild, All is Silent is Balmorhea’s third release, but it really feels like they’ve hit their stride on this one. The album hits shops tomorrow, but is available on iTunes today. Balmorhea has also been nice enough to give us an MP3 — click here to download it. If you are in Austin this weekend, they are having a CD release party on March 13 at Ballet Austin, as well as playing several events, showcases, etc. during SXSW.

Today will close the International Documentary Challenge 2009, a filmmaking competition that solicits the work of brilliant (and crazy) storytellers and editors racing against the clock to put together thematic work. After choosing from one of two assigned documentary genres like sports or music, the teams have had five days to put together their best entries for the chance to premiere at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival. Inspired by the understanding that “filmmaking tools are now so affordable that anyone willing to invest the time and energy to tell a story can do so,” Challenge founder Doug Whyte of KDHX Community Media has been pleased to draw professional and amateur filmmakers alike, 80 percent of whom turn in a completed film by the hard deadline. The 12 films selected this year will join nominees from previous competitions, including docs about shopping carts, small town prostitution, and mixed music trading. Submissions are required to be mailed by 5 p.m., which is the same time that these video warriors can finally get some sleep.
