Ever wonder what happens to those big vinyl street banners that are displayed at museums when an exhibit ends? BetterWall is a Colorado based company that is in the business of selling these unique and rare banners. All of BetterWall’s banners are the authentic museum originals, and part of the sales proceeds get funneled back to the museums (in New York, L.A., S.F., Denver, etc.). Plus, after selling the intact banners and recycling the torn ones, BetterWall keeps over ten tons of vinyl out of our nation’s landfills each year. BetterWall has come up with a creative, philanthropic, and eco-friendly business venture, and the product is an aesthetically pleasing (albeit expensive) way to fill your wall space.

Jamie— liked your commentary on BetterWall. There’s a project in Johannesburg which puts unemployed people to work making cool “bags” out of these old ad banners. We have three of them in our household— one that I use everyday as a tote, an art portfolio, and another larger book bag Katlego uses… good stuff for the environment and the socio-economic picture too!

The moms weigh in one this one! Nice use of otherwise wasted great art! Hmm, betterwall art – I’d like one in my holiday stocking! Annie

I agree that these are beautiful, but they’re also outrageously expensive, particularly for something that is essentially waste. I realize that a portion of the proceeds go back to the museum (and selling them for $900 is better than sending them to a landfill), but exactly what percentage does? Their “limited” nature doesn’t justify the price for me either, and frankly I’m a little tired of hearing about them. I wonder if Joshspear.com’s repeated coverage of this Colorado-based company has to do with a personal connection between the two companies.
