Greetings. Salutations. Time to win some free #$#% again!

If you’ve kept up with the site, you know about Hulger and their desire to see the whole mobile phone carrying world go retro. This week we’re giving you the opportunity to take home any of their chunky, corded handsets that connect to your slim, cellular phone.

The Prize: One Hulger handset of your choice (retail value, from $39 – $190)

This Week’s Rules: We’re feeling a little jaunty this week, so here’s a pop culture themed phone question: What is the worst cell phone product placement in a movie? Everyone has seen a flick that either puts the brand name front and center, uses the phone as a major plot device, or — if you’ve been out recently, as we have — just puts a whole f-ing commercial before the film. Point these out to us, and the one that makes us groan the loudest wins. Winners announced on Friday.

Keanu Reeves wins for both his prodigal use of the Samsung slider phones in The Matrix, and his errant abuse of cell phones in Speed.

At this point, it’s a wonder he doesn’t have his own brand. Blegh.

This one was from the latest James Bond flick. Lets just say Motorola seized the opportunity. http://www.geekologie.com/2007/10/01/phone-car.jpg

“Instinct” The greatest product placement movie of all time!

Phil Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 10:30 am

Alright, when I picked up a copy of the Matrix Reloaded all those years ago (yes I realize it was only like 5), I was just slapped across the face with Samsung ads. Obvious story of manufacturers trying to cash in! They even marketed the phone! Smart.

Here’s an article on the action: http://www.theinquirer.net/en/inquirer/news/2003/05/15/matrix-phone-appears-from-samsung

And here’s a picture and description of the phone: http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Samsung-SPH-N270-Matrix-Phone-phone-p_549.html

Final Fantasy: Advent Children had some rather gratuitous close-ups of Panasonic’s cell phones. Ultimate groan-able moment: when the victory theme song from the game is played… but it’s the bad guy’s ringtone.

Daniel Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 10:49 am

I know there were no cell phones but in Waynes World when they did the Pepsi, Doretos, pizza and head ache medicine, that was the absolute best… so subtle!

Charles D Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 10:55 am

It wasn’t all that groanable, but the unreleased Nokia ExpressMusic 5800 (aka Tube) in the movie The Dark Knight. Not to mention Nokia was also included in the movies viral marketing campaign (which WAS pretty clever all around)

Umm that is an easy one the motorola phone in that movie cellular

chuck Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 11:24 am

further clarity … motorola underwrote the film so the whole dam movie was product placement…

How about the character “Frenzy” in the transformers? He was a Nokia phone, perfect product placement.

Mike Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 3:11 pm

How about The Departed? A pretty good movie, don’t get me wrong, but how does these guys not know about “Quiet” mode? And call history? And…

PS – Matt Damon should’ve gotten an Oscar for swapping out SIM cards in a phone booth.

Remy Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 3:33 pm

How about One Missed Call?
It’s a fairly new movie but the fact that cell-phones were actually made a premise for a horror movie is disgusting. And I mean, getting a call from the moment you die? That’s just awful.

Dyroza Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 6:28 pm

Vantage Point.

The movie is clearly a Sony product buy out. Produced by Sony and every gadget in the movie is Sony. 8 points of view but one truth: Sony.

Anthony Tuesday, 09.09.08 @ 6:50 pm

Did anyone watch Cellular? NONSTOP Nokia cellphone use for the entire frickin movie.

CLOVERFIELD – fo’ sho.
1. Various Nokia phones displayed throughout the movie.
2. A nokia subway poster.
3. Right a the start a Nokia 7373 was held to ‘film’ the main character and I swear I couldn’t focus on anything except the phone.
4. And lets not forget the guy loots a store for a nokia battery (which suspiciously works without being charged first).
Still … great movie.

Samsung did a pretty good job themselves.. ‘The Samsung Instinct’ coming (came) june 20th.

Nokia in Cloverfield. In some scenes the Nokia phone is larger and more “in your face” than the main characters. Not to mention the huge posters littering the screen…

Ryan Wednesday, 09.10.08 @ 11:20 pm

The Movie, ‘Crank’ Not a fabulous movie to start with. The main character’s (Jason Statham) phone rings through the entire film, its this weird sort of dying phone ring tone. Then there is this end sequence.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbXIJK1V3AU

The phone happens to be the Nokia 8800 Sirocco Edition, anything that you can hold a good conversation on (audio wise) whilst falling out of a plane has got to be priceless!

Ryan Thursday, 09.11.08 @ 10:43 am

One that really got to me [and don't judge me for seeing this movie - haha] was the overuse of both phone, but especially the Sidekick in The Devil Wear Prada….. actually how about the over-abuse of Sidekicks in almost every [teen] movie from 2002 until now!!
