Despite the weather turning sour on us a today, we had a chance to pop around some shops in Downtown Miami (we usually get sucked over to Miami Beach, so this was, in a weird way quite refreshing). One shop we stopped by we enjoyed was Culture Kings– which was primarily a sneaker boutique in the Design District–and not only carried a nice line up of some fairly rare shoes, retro Jordans and the like– but there was also a back room with more limited edition one-of-a-kind pieces customized by what appeared to be local Miami artists. This was clearly one of the most stop spots for sneaker junkies in town this weekend. They don’t have a website up, but you can check some pictures out and get more information on their MySpace page.

Who the heck typeset the Culture Kings logo?

For starters, look at the horrible kerning between the “L” and the “T.” They should be pushed closer together (and maybe the foot of the L extended a bit.)

I’d also customize the arms of the “C” to extend a bit farther right, and heighten the crown.

They might also consider adding some slightly more fanciful touch… But first, clean up those letterforms and spacing. Geez.

First of all…”sneaker boutique”. Honestly? A boutique…for sneakers.

Second…”rare shoes”. Rare…shoes. Like it’s a Picasso or a Rothko or an early Jackson Pollock something.

Sheesh. Miami.

Some people will buy anything.

Is this any worse than other boutiques? At least sneakers serve a good function. And something doesn’t need to be a piece of art to be rare.

first of all, not to be disrespectful, but the first two people don’t know what they’re talking about. the reason that the letter style is the way that it is, would be because the bottom extension of the “L” and the top extention of the”T” would overlap, and would actually make the letters have un-even spacing. if you take the space between the two extensions, u would see that it is the same as the distance between the other lettering.
as far as the fact that there is such a thing as a “sneaker boutique”, well, i guess some people are totally oblivious to the fact that there actually IS a sneaker culture out there… just ask dave of daves quality meat. (if THAT makes any sense…?) lol.

aaron Tuesday, 05.22.07 @ 10:58 pm

dude! i live in miami, and i jsut recently discovered culture kings. but i am a sneaker head and just to let you know there are other shoes on this planet other than ur dads old docker penny loafers, and they probably would cost you a whole months rent. some ppl decide to pay shit loads for something hot that they can post up in their pad, others choose to wear it on their feet, for you to drool and gawk at. at leats these rare shoes have a story of culture other than a bleak story of an insane dude that painted a pic that my nephew could fuck up in 5 minutes.

**word to jae. i know that store, daves quality meat, i read about it in complex and im dying to shop there, but like i said… i live in miami. o tear…
