I never thought I would find a store where they actually turn away customers, but the Denim Bar in Arlington, VA. doesn’t let anyone just walk away with the latest and greatest in designer denim. Mauro Farinelli is more of an educator than a store owner and that is for good reason. Jeans are not just fabric to Farinelli, but rather works of art each crafted and stitched in their own unique way. Its not called the Denim Bar for no reason either, the sales staff dress as bartenders and you can enjoy a drink while you peruse the complex world of designer jeans. Mauro and co-owner Mary Alexander make sure to stock denim for a wide range of customers. For the denim enthusiast that enjoys their jeans more untouched, you can find great pieces from Kicking Mule, Sugar Cane and Nudie. But, if you want a nicely distressed jean with a fashion forward fit, Mauro has got you covered with jeans by SFAM, Tsubi and True Religion. If all of these different brand names have your head spinning, don’t worry. Mauro gives every customer there very own free consultation to help find the pair of jeans that best compliments your body. The Denim Bar is located in Pentagon Row at 1101 South Joyce Street Arlington, Virginia 22202 703.414.8202

Great concept

Very true, awesome selection. Mauro’s staff is great too: knowlegeable and friendly. Ask for Kristina. I’m usually intimidated by fashion snobbery found at some departments stores. She made me feel at home, finding me the perfect pair of jeans. The wine helped too!

I love the concept of the Denim Bar, however, i beg to differ about the service. I noticed that the jean fit is very small (on average) in both stores. Because I am larger than, say a 25-28, the attitude of some people was not too nice. So they moved me into mens jeans. The average american woman is not a 0 or a 2. It’s a 14. But it’s unfortunate that “these people” only see and think small.
I was able to find a nice pair of jeans but i probably won’t shop there again. It’s definitely not the price that I’m concerned with but the attitudes that people assume when they have to help voluptous women, especially.
Never judge a book by it’s cover!!!

i’ve bought several items from denim bar. . .primarily because I know Mauro and love to support local businesses as opposed to going to neiman marcus or saks for a pair of jeans. . . however, the staff is less than desirable. . . I don’t dispute that they are jean knowledgeable but the customer service is lacking. I am a size 0/2 so there was no size disccrimination but an overall snobish factor does exist. Listen “kids” 1st of all you sell jeans—so don’t be overly impressed with yourselfs. . .2nd if anyone should be acting like a snob, it’s your client (me) because I’m the one coming in with my platinum amex to buy a pair of $300 jeans!

Jean knowledge means nothing without proper service. Remeber guys it’s not your personal social shop. . .it’s a job. . .you work there. . .customers don’t think that you are cool and we could care less about what you guys did the night before and we really don’t care to know who your favorite band is either—so save the small talk for the backroom—just do you job and sell the merchandise!

Everytime I’ve gone into the Denim Bar I’ve been treated with the utmost respect, most likely because I walk in there with a positive demeanor and not with my nose in the air. Maybe they didn’t want to help you, Lynn, because you strolled in thinking they were supposed to kiss your ass. I don’t mind the staff talking about what’s going on because I like not only finding a great pair of jeans but meeting new people as well. Ah well. That’s just me.

Or maybe they just love my AmEx Black Card.

Lynn Sunday, 12.17.06 @ 9:54 pm

Dear Sarah W.
on the contrary. . .i don’t expect people to kiss my ass. . .nor do i go into retail stores looking for “friends” unlike yourself. i expect decent service (not even stellar just decent!). . .marginal customer service consist of helping someone find a pair of jeans in their size without the customer seeking out the sales staff—-one would hardly call that “ass kissing” . . .
by the way, I doubt you have an amex black card. . .most people who have them don’t advertise it You sound like you have low self estem if you are trying to “meet new people in jean stores :(

perhaps you should take that imaginary amex black and buy yourself some friends or a good therapist

best of luck with therapy!
Lynn

I think Sarah W. was being sarcastic, Lynn. Maybe you should be the one to look inside yourself and wonder why you’re lurking your own comments on this blog.

I just had THE WORST shopping experience at the Denim Bar.

After TWO MONTHS of telling me they were ordering me new jeans after the button ripped out of the $250 pair I bought on the first day I wore them, the staff just decided they couldn’t help me anymore, and eventually refunded my money. (Did I mention they had their seamstress “fix” them but then they came back to me over a week later with no change? And that was after Mauro told me he’d have them taken care of in two days.)

Very much NOT impressed for the prices they charge.

Well I had heard about this place for a while, and had wanted to make it in and finally did. The selection is incredible and the staff was pretty cool. I ended up getting two pairs of jeans and learned alot about the jeans from one of the staff members, it was totally worth while. I can say it was a very good expirence.

Dean Thursday, 01.18.07 @ 11:05 am

We’ll i’ve only been to the store once before but i received really good service and free beer who can complain. the staff seemed to be pretty cool and the enviroment was pretty laid back, it seems to me that some of you guys might just have an internet axe to grind…thats just me.

Kathy Friday, 02.23.07 @ 4:44 pm

I have been to the Denim Bar mulitple times and have received varying degrees of service. I was a bit put off by the young gentleman eating pizza behind the bar opposed to servicing the many customers. But, hey maybe they don’t allow lunch breaks… Unfortunately, my visits are usually on a Saturday afternoon, probably the busiest time. They could improve the dressing room situation. The wait to share a dressing room is way too long. I am a jeans girl though, so I will keep going until other merchants carry the diverse lines. For J jeans try Periwinkle on Slaters Lane, Alexandria. You will get great service.

Susie Sunday, 04.22.07 @ 8:47 pm

People on this blog are shallow and immature and for that reason, i won’t be visiting the denim bar. I’ll stick with Saks…you get good quality and down to earth sales people. good bye.

I noticed some of the comments about not everyone being a size 0 or 2. I agree with that. Jeans are a hard fit. I had so many problems and decided to try my own line. I am not heavy, just have some curves and athletic thighs and hips. I started Little in the Middle to design jeans that are one size smaller in the waist than the hips so you don’t have the gap in the back, http://www.littleinthemiddle.com. I have learned that many people that are in the fashion business are already celebrities and people want what the celebrities are wearing. Little in the Middle jeans fit a specific shape and they are great! Also, True Jeans is a new company that I am working with that helps people find the best fit for their shape, http://www.truejeans.com. They eliminate the frustation of trying on all the styles and visiting all the stores.

I’ve become a patron of the Denim Bar… only have been to the Alexandria site and I personally have nothing but praise. I’ve dealt personally with Mauro as well as Kristina and the tall black guy( i forget his name). I think anyone who has a problem with the service is simply just asking for too much. The staff is personal and responsive to the needs of the customer as well as extremely knowledgeable .. Great selection and the prices are actually significantly lower than department stores like Nieman’s and even Barney’s.. What more is there to say??
