feira_hippie.jpg.jpeg On Sundays, a walk just two blocks away from Ipanema beach reveals a bustling bazaar, where independent crafts-people selling an array of clothes, jewelry, hand-made artifacts and original artwork assemble to form the Feira Hippie, or Hippy Fair. Every stall boasts a variation of Brazillian inspired artistry, from canvases depicting abstract renditions of patchwork favela neighborhoods to clothes hand printed with the traditional patterns of Brazil’s indigenous tribes, with their creators (many of them distinctly hippy) manning their posts with laid back smiles and a mood for bargaining. An American buck goes a long way here, and it effectively beats out any tourist shop found anywhere between Leme and Flamengo.

Nobody likes Rio?

This fair is very nice one. Another cool fair in Rio is the “Copacana Fair” near beach just in front of Othon Hotel. Just take a look: http://www.flickr.com/photos/selusava/3076214144/

But the “Copacana Fair” is very tourist fair, with art, clothes and gifts.

In São Paulo a very cool and different Fair made to and for young people is the “Mercado Mundo Mix” (the translation could be Mix World Market), I can say that is very nice fashion and cultural fair for those who wants to find differents and rare things and in particular NO famous Brands. For 4 years I have been visiting this fair and for me is the best one!!!

I absolutely love the Feira Hippie. I have been to several of these little markets in South America and that one was my favorite one. I saw a sketch that really moved me and I did not have the $400 R to buy it on the spot. I had to leave Rio before the next Sunday when I would have been able to buy it. I cannot find it anywhere as it was done by an independent artist. Heartbreaking.
