We posted about the Firewinder last year — a decorative outdoor light powered by the wind. Well, these breezy Brits just won the 2008 Green Dot Award for creating an invention that aims to show people just how breathtaking clean renewable energy can be. They’re so excited they want to give two readers their own Firewinder to try out. Just post a comment below about what kind of wind-swept place of honor you’ll put it in and we’ll pick a winner next week.

I’d love to have one of these on my patio.

Daniel Romano Wednesday, 03.18.09 @ 8:05 pm

I live right in front of the entrance of the Guanabara’s bay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. That is why I get some crazy wind in my apartment. From my window you can see the world famous Sugar Loaf Mountain. And that’s exactly where I would be hanging the Firewinder. I’m glad they ship worlwide!

april brooks Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:04 am

i live in tulsa oklahoma, right in the heart of tornado alley!

Eric Hines Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:05 am

Freaking sweet

Robb Shurr Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:22 am

I’ll put it on top of my car

Jennifer Mueller Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:24 am

I would place this on a hanging stand next to our new pool. Night time swimming with this would be wonderful!

creede Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:27 am

I would tie it to my dog and make him run circles around the house. untz untz untz untz

will guy Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:29 am

Brad Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:29 am

Definitely on my balcony, you know, to show up all my neighbors.

Outside my window in our top floor office, in downtown Providence, RI. Aside from working late nights, I think the artistic locals would really appreciate the addition. I love these!

Alexander Graf Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:35 am

I live in Innsbruck, in Austria. Besides being a generally windy place all year round, on occasion we get the foehn winds from the south. Warm air builds up in the mountains, coming from Italy. Then, when the air has cooled down slightly, it rushes down the valley, changing the weather within minutes. This unique climactic condition is a feature of Innsbruck’s weather so we have some seriously windy days in the city during the spring and fall.

Well, and since my appartment’s balcony faces south, that’s where I would be hanging the Firewinder.

Ryan Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:36 am

I’d hang it in Chicago, midwest city is the city where wind blow.

Deanne Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 11:50 am

My patio backs up to the tube tracks in London. I think it would be awesome to freak out the commuters in the evening :)

Pong Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 12:00 pm

Man, this is awesome. I’ll wear it on a helmet and race round the White House.

Jesse S. Gaddis Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 12:01 pm

I would most likely open all the windows and doors in my apartment, hence creating a mini wind tunnel comparable to that freaky scene in Poltergeist with the kid and the television. You know she died shortly after that movie right? So weird.

jordan g Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 12:27 pm

My barn working, tree hugging, garden planting grandma (who I live with in the hills of LA) would get a kick out of this. I’d probably take it to the top of Verdugo Mountain on weekend nights bc it’s so awesome – maybe we could bring a little light to LA amidst the smog and greese we breath everyday!

Magic Tony Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 12:33 pm

Scottsdale, Arizona has a reputation for its beautiful weather, but most residents only live here through the winter months and never experience the wonder of monsoon season. In a matter of moments, the weather can go from placid and comfortable to hurricane-like with lightning that makes you feel like you’re at a rock concert. The firewinder would fit perfectly in this environment. I can imagine sitting inside watching it whirl in my garden during one of these amazing storms.

Carolyn Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 12:58 pm

On our front patio!@

Scott Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 1:50 pm

I would tie it around myself and then go skiing at night!

meredith Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 2:44 pm

My back deck is the center of a “U” shaped house. I live in a tri-plex, and i have the best deck! I have collected patio chairs from other people’s intended trash pick up, and hang round bulb christmas lights out there when friends come over to to relax and talk. I’d hang it at the edge where it would light up the place, and catch the wind!

Grant Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 3:06 pm

That’s pretty cool.

SteveDC Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 3:07 pm

I’d love one of these on my deck to light up my grilling/party area!

Woty Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 3:23 pm

I would attach my Firewinder to a sturdy but light-weight gantry that would be fastened to my shoulders and braced around my midriff. The gantry would suspend the Firewinder device securely behind my person at a prescribed height. Now, hey-presto, in the event of a still day I could power this contraption with my very own gastric wind generator.

BigEFromNJ Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 3:23 pm

I have an beautiful garden right outside my Northern New Jersey office window.
It is openly exposed to the beautiful breezes that continually roll in from the northwest . As I often work late into the evening, the Firewinder would provide spectacular visual entertainment to both myself as well as to all of my surrounding neighbors who will soon be asking me where they can get one.

Kayleen Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 3:38 pm

Practically every day is a windy day in Storm Lake, Iowa (the name is no coincidence), where we’re surrounded by wind farms (see http://bit.ly/14FuBB for more info). I honestly don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say we have only about one dozen days a year that aren’t windy. I live above a business downtown on the main street, so I would put the Firewinder out my front window so everyone could enjoy it all year long.

jason Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 3:52 pm

i would absolutely love to hang it from the chris columbus statue at columbus circle, across the street from my apt building. that would be quite nice.

Rob Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 6:17 pm

at my parents house in windy scotland

Scott Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 7:01 pm

On my very un-impressive, un-imaginative patio to make it infinitely less un-impressive.

Naville T Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 9:26 pm

I would love to have one of these things.
I would put it outside on my patio near the pool: cool lights AND cool reflections of it on the water.

Tim Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 9:32 pm

I would hang this above my bed and let the window open ALL YEAR!!! That little thing looks awesome!

Mike Thursday, 03.19.09 @ 10:29 pm

Very nice! And just in time for spring!

Javier Friday, 03.20.09 @ 1:25 am

I’d hang it in my bedroom and let my ceiling fan blow it.

Alex C Friday, 03.20.09 @ 2:48 am

I’m in Chicago and need one of these!

Elyk Friday, 03.20.09 @ 11:16 am

This would make a great addition to the bamboo forest I have in my back yard.

Thanks Josh Spear.

Brian Friday, 03.20.09 @ 2:05 pm

besides the wind my homeboy passed the other day, i get a great breeze from my window overlooking a golf course

Dudley Bainter Friday, 03.20.09 @ 3:28 pm

We have 12 Wind Chimes in our back yard. With a wind we would have a light show with our sound show.

Jeff Friday, 03.20.09 @ 4:05 pm

I would put that little gem right outside my office window in San Francisco that overlooks the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. It would become the perfect beacon of light on those foggy summer nights!

Justin Friday, 03.20.09 @ 9:47 pm

I would put this next to my two bird feeders. That will be a magic show.

JJ Saturday, 03.21.09 @ 1:13 pm

I would put it on the dock leading to the oyster beds at our new organic wind-powered algae biofuel farm on the Atlantic coast.

Brent Saturday, 03.21.09 @ 4:11 pm

I live in Chicago, I’d hang it outside my door on my deck for everyone around to enjoy.

biba Saturday, 03.21.09 @ 4:28 pm

we’d hang this in front of our apartment on 9th street in park slope, brooklyn. That way the foot traffic to and fro Prospect Park concerts on late summer evenings (MGMT- July 1~) would be dazzled by the whirly lights as the wind barrels down the wide swath of street. It would be a destination for the whole neighborhood! so lovely.

Walter Sunday, 03.22.09 @ 5:42 am

I’d put it on the dock at my family’s Tidal creek house down in an undeveloped beach town in South Carolina. At night, all we have are stars and candles to light our conversations and libations on the creek. This would definitely add a little more magic to our little escapes from the world. You have no idea how much I enjoy getting to a place cellphones don’t even work and where time slows down to meet the pace of nature.

Frank Sunday, 03.22.09 @ 5:41 pm

I would definitely put this up at my parents house where its windy pretty much all year long. They live on the coast in Athens, Greece

Steven Page Monday, 03.23.09 @ 5:10 am

Man I have been following these guys for ages waiting to bring this light to the deep south, SOUTH AFRICA before the word cup. What a spectacular specticle it would create if we could brighten up our country with the firewinder before we are flooded with soccer fans. We are known for all our power failures but this could be our power success.

mi Monday, 03.23.09 @ 10:19 am

my balcony faces a main street in Tel Aviv, I would love to put it there for everyone to see

Matt P Monday, 03.23.09 @ 12:39 pm

I’d hang it out my window which faces an AIG building. Everyone would be able to see that less is more.

Danny K Monday, 03.23.09 @ 9:23 pm

We just moved into a five acre orchard and can see this swirling under the plum grove which is just in front of the house… awesome!

artzy-gal Tuesday, 03.24.09 @ 1:06 am

i have had my eye on the firewinder for a while now. i would love to see them being sold here in the states.

if i was so lucky to be gifted one…i would share it with the neighborhood. i am in indiana…flat and boring…and not many people here know about any renewable energy sources. so this would blow their mind! and i could help educate the people here in the midwest of the united states of america…where forward thinking should be strived after.

also i am part of an artist community and who knows maybe it could inspire another great idea.
