Throwing away jeans is kind of like throwing away a kidney–it’s a part of your body, you use it every day, but lets be honest…you have two. If you have to toss a pair, the most karmically responsible thing you can do is turn it into insulation for a home in a needy community. National Jean Company and Earnest Sewn are sponsoring a denim drive benefiting Cotton. From Blue to Green. The goal is to get 1000 pairs (insulation for two homes) and after a charity fashion show last week, they’re half way there. Just show up at any Nation Jean Company location in NYC or Long Island for collection. They’ll understand if you need a moment to say goodbye.

I’m concerned about many of these “repurposing” fabrications finding its way into eco-green and sustainability mantras. As a fashion designer I know over 99% of denim is made from toxic chemicals that put off effluents. Just because you buy something that says it’s 100% organic doesn’t account for the harsh solvents used to dye, texture, and protect the textile and now we’re going to shred it up and put it in people’s homes?

put denim insulation in my home when I remodeled…definitely a lot less toxic, if at all, than regular fiberglass insulation. Unless your home is made of mud you dont have many ways to insulate your home in order to pass your inspection.

There are technologies emerging that really focus on sustainability and cradle to cradle design. There are biopolymers now that can replace any and everything plastic. The best part is they can be made at room temperatures, leave no effluents, and are biodegradable. Without any toxic input, I hope we see technologies like these make their way into mass industry.
