The Spear Collective’s own Josh Feldman has just started a new Knacktion project called Nameau. It’s basically a site where you can buy company and product .com names, ready-to-go with logos. Dreaming up a name for a new business venture can be a challenge to say the least, so the goal with Nameau is to help people with that important first step. To me, it’s an interesting way to think about about the initial step of a company’s branding– to go shop for an already constructed name and logo. But then again, why not leave it to the pros in this age of made-to-order everything? Nameau’s prices are all over the board – and some names look to be on sale – but each does include a domain name and a logo design. They’re also available to do custom name and logo creation, site development, and hosting. you can contact the Nameau team here.

very cool idea, brilliant! Be interested in how they cover off all industries?

I realize that the ready-to-go logos are an exercise to help a client through the process, but from a client’s point of view (and most non-designers who view the site) it just perpetuates a myth that no thought or reason needs to go into an identity package to make it look good. They could save some money and time by purchasing a pre-packaged “look” rather than hiring a firm to give them an actual solution that addresses their needs.

I just think this is dangerous for the industry in general.

Jason, you have a good point.

In the case of Nameau, the idea is that if someone needs a name for their company or product and finds a name/logo combination that works perfectly for them, they can buy it on the spot. If the name or logo isn’t right though, it’s made clear on the site that they can have a custom one developed for them.

Each name and logo were created with an end use in mind– a kid’s site, or a housing developement, or a fun web 2.0 app, etc.
