I think I’ve been blacklisted and/or heavily fined by at least 6 libraries in my lifetime, and I’m at the point where I just steal borrow books from my friends who have bad memories and generously donate to many a B&N employee’s 401K. If I can find a library who will trust me with their books, I’ll make sure to download this handy little app for OSX called Library Books, which syncs your record of borrowed books with your library’s catalogue, then adds the due dates of said books to your iCal so you’ll never miss another return again. There are hundreds of supported libraries worldwide, so the chances that your local is on there are pretty good. Whether or not you find the motivation to actually take them back, however, is all on you.

Josh, this app is GREAT… especially since it’s for Mac, but I’d like to tell everyone out there who isn’t frequently using a library to try BookSwim.com – an online book rental library club. There are no late fees so you don’t have to worry about when a book needs to be returned. Books get shipped to your door and when you’re done, just ship them back in a prepaid bag.

For people who can’t stand having a time limit for reading, this should be right up your alley.

This is like having a gas tank on your bicycle… the reason I read books is to escape from the computer. If you can’t remember when your books are due, perhaps you could WRITE on a PIECE OF PAPER and use it for a bookmark. Just words of a former generation print designer who has no web skills, but who remembers when it was exciting to buy extra BYTES of memory for a Mac SE. (I wonder if NO WEB SKILLS qualifies for disability compensation…)

i understand your point, Steve, but I know a lot of my friends and myself included will a) read five or six books at a time and b) consistently put a book down and either forget about it, get distracted by another book or have it lots in piles of peridicals on whatever shelf/table it lays. in that case, the paper wouldn’t work for me — but as attached to my blackberry as i am, i know that a calendar reminder would send me on a wild goose chase, trying to find the damned book, make sure i finish it if the desire is ther, and get it back on time.

i guess this just illustrates how reliant i am on technology to keep me organized, is all. to each their own.
