When I think of the small businesses I’d open up, I keep them limited to the realm of practicality. I’m talking clothing boutique, small restaurant, etc. When I hear about someone who starts their own car, shoe, or watch company, I am intrigued. Over the years, my interest in watches has progressively increased while my counterparts ditched them for cell phones. I think of the timepieces as work of art, both aesthetically and mechanically. It’s only fitting that a watchmaker would be considered an artist.

Dion McAsey started Magrette Timepieces while he was still a Managing Director of a creative agency. Surprisingly, he says it was an easy transition because he took it slow, learning along the way. He’s formed partnerships on a global scale, using straps from Canada, hands/dials from Germany, and a Japanese movement. Everything gets assembled by hand in New Zealand and tested (water and regulation).

Last year’s release, the Regattare Valencia, sports a 21-jewel Miyota movement, 2mm sapphire glass, a beautiful dial and luminescent hands, and two leather straps to match any occasion. Like all the Magrette watches it’s nautically themed, with this particular model displaying the America’s Cup colors. What impresses me most about Magrette is that you are buying a total package. Customer service, the packaging (you have got to see the leather roll case), and the extras (straps, tool, handwritten warranty card) make for a very pleasing experience. If you’re looking for a dependable watch that can work at both the office and a the post-work bar, check them out.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Yes, this watch looks strikingly similar to the historic Panerai, one of my favorite timepieces. It is, however, significantly cheaper for those of you without rich girlfriends, good jobs, or a taste in extraordinary time keeping. Thanks for all the comments, we love them.]

k Wednesday, 07.09.08 @ 9:10 am

wow, looks like a bad panerai rip off..

anonimous Wednesday, 07.09.08 @ 10:02 am

yup, screams panerai to me, and at that price, youd think theyd come up with their own design….

I wanted to point out a small correction for Joel Pirela – The watch Regattare is $369 USD. It is not $1090. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

joel pirela Thursday, 07.10.08 @ 6:49 am

you are correct. Still that’s $300 too much for a lame rip off with a crappy japanese movement. The Nautilus is another rip off and that, you can get for $1090!

I work in the industrial design industry. If you copy a design and post it online I will trash it. no mercy. There are original choices out there for less money (in case you don’t have a rich girlfriend!!!!)

RobertQ Monday, 04.20.09 @ 8:46 am

hey joe, in case you don’t know, panerai is also a rip off of old Rolex designs. Nowadays, everything that comes out in this world is a rip off, and that includes your own designs.

Bromo Tuesday, 06.30.09 @ 6:30 am

I checked the website and saw they had watches ranging from ~$300 to ~$4k. Which isn’t too bad considering that it has a classic shape/style from the 1920’s and 30’s that isn’t too common these days.

The movement in their low end watches (Miyota) is from Citizen, and costs about $35 wholesale. The “awesome” movement used by Rolex (ETA2824) is about $80 wholesale and is sold with their more epexsive range (~$500 – $5k)

The more expensive watches have intricate Maori designs carved into them with the same basic shape. So for “originality” I haven’t seen anything out there much like their top of the line. I think their sleek lower end design certainly has few peers near the price point (At that price point you can choose between a Rolex Oyster rip off or a Panerai rip off using your logic.)

Well I’m glad he’s bringing this to everyone’s attention – thanks!

WOW YOU GUYS SURE KNOW HOW TO CRITIQUE A MAN’S ENDEAVOR.
IT’S JUST EASY TO SAY SOMETHING NICE OR NOTHING AT ALL. BE NICE THE WORLD IS A TOUGH COMPETITIVE MARKET AND GETTING TOUGHER. FACE IT VALUE FOR DOLLAR IS IMPORTANT AND EVERYTHING TODAY IS OVER PRICED. I’VE HAD ONE OF THESE WATCHES FOR 3 YEARS I THINK… AND IT’S A FINE DESIGN & STILL RUNNING…MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE IDEALISTIC OWNER OF THE COMPANY.
THANKS MR. McASEY …

HMMM…WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF IT , I ONLY WISH I HAD. CONGRATS…TERENCE

To RobertQ:
Panerai is not a rip off of Rolex, go do your research before you make a fool of yourself.
Panerai commissioned the watches from Rolex who entirely manufactured the first Panerai watches to Panerai specs, they based the design on an oyster case which was never sold as a rolex model, I can not remember the case ref no. Rolex oyster models were smaller.
Panerai and Rolex evolved the design which was for military use only. Modern day Panerai designs are based on those watches of the 30-50s and certainly not a rip off.
