With consumer space voyages looking more and more promising, and freak kitchen accidents an ever looming possibility, Omega is bringing back – in a limited release of under 2000 units – its Speedmaster Moonwatch “Alaska Project” timepiece. This design was cooked up in the 70’s during the early days of NASA forays into the void, and boasts temperature resistance encompassing more than 400 degrees Celsius (from -148 to +260) thanks to it’s red-anodized aluminum construction. You get one of these on your wrist (price TBD), and you’ll set the standard both on Mars and at Burning Man– same difference, I guess.

Being obsessed with watches and space technology, especially the early space programs, I was intrugued by this watch. Passing through Heathrow I saw this watch on sale and bought it! I paid about 2,500 pounds or 5,000 USD. They are making a limited run of 1970 pieces. What you can’t see in the photograph is this is a convential Omega Speedmaster 1861 movement set in a massive, removable, aluminum case. You also receive the tools to change out the white velcro strap to a convential stainless steel linked band. I like the best of both worlds, a big blocky watch as the classic style of the Speedmaster. One dislike is the hour marks are not visible as they are luminescent marks
