Last year, Panasonic hosted the Next Generation Talent to give UK design students a crack at creating an advertisement and win a bunch of gear. They let me sit on the judges panel and blab on and on about some amazing student work. The contest was a success and the winning video was great. This year they've narrowed down the entries to four and asked the judges back to choose a winner. I think I've picked my favorite, Paul Bryan, but help me make up my mind. Have a quick view at the four remaining finalist and tell me your favorite and why in the comments below. Just to spur you along we're going to give away the noise canceling headphones they were going to give to me as a gift to a commenter at random below.

Have a look at all four videos after the jump.

Paul Bryan

Steffan Harrison

Romaine Reid

David Childs-Clarke

Definitely Paul Bryan’s video. Excellent soundtrack, great product evolution, strong touch-points emphasizing color and hardware, and an overall clean execution. I like clean. :)

I like Romaine Reid’s best, it’s very well synchronized and really highlights the products while presenting the audio/visual appeal.

I agree with Paul Bryan, love the classic devices, I’d put Reid second and a tie for third.

The first one is solid.

It uses a simple concept > timeline, to get across the message that Panasonic have history of creating some of the best products out in the TV/AV sector.

The music while heavy in bass, doesn’t make you want to turn it off and it grabs your attention and keeps your there as you wait for the money shot.

The highlight for me is that he has showcased a variety of TV qualities people would like to see // color/motion/depth and definiton.

Great job overall. I wouldn’t blink twice if i saw this on TV, whereas the 2nd clip is a little choppy and basic for what i would expect from Panasonic. The 3rd kind of reeks of Apple inspiration. And the 4th starts strong but finishes a little like it forgot what it was trying to achieve…

My two cents anyway for what its worth…

I’m torn between Paul Bryan and David Childs-Clarke. They’re both very creative and wonderfully executed. I feel that Steffan Harisson’s film is missing an idea, and Romaine’s is great but very “Sony Bravia” oriented.

Definitely Romaine Reid’s. I loved the flow of images with the music. Not distracting like some of the others were. Highlights many of Panasonic’s products in a very creative way.

Romaine comes in 1st place for me, I think it is very well done and the pace of the advert is perfect! It tells me about the products and the benefits. I can definately see this on a real Panasonic advert.

Without a doubt 1st place has to go to Romaine Reid’s. The execution of this piece is on a professional level for me, and it does the best job in showcasing the HD product range of Panasonic. To fit this information into 35 seconds, without loosing the message is a great achievement and really should be congratulated!!

I loved the message that Paul was trying to achieve however I have to say that the execution wasn’t there for me, and the flickering between shots took away from what was a good idea. I also think that out of Paul’s and Romaine’s, I think that Romaine’s piece is more true to the Panasonic brand.

Great effort all round, but Romaine wins this one!!

Paul Bryan’s. With sounds and colours (very important elements for a product) Panasonic’s story was story told strong emotionally.

Roy Sunday, 09.06.09 @ 10:03 am

Objectively, I think all 4 missed the mark.

None of them made me want to buy the products, none of them showcased the products’ outstanding features, and none of them embodied what Panasonic stands for.

Ultimately if an advertisement fails to excite people about the products or the brand, I think it fails, no matter the razzmatazz.

If I had to choose, I’ll say Reid’s work is ahead, but only by a hair’s breadth. It is the only one that I feel had any real value, and not just a fancy piece of audio visual that conveys nothing.

For the purposes of creating an advertisement for Panasonic I believe Paul Bryan has captured the objective better than the other three contestants.

Paul Bryan’s commercial is sophisticated yet intriguing at the same time. the timeline idea is a common one, but the method Mr. Bryan used of the constant flashing, almost picturesque look is innovative. The soundtrack fits well with the video and is a ear-catching song. The advertisement is memorable and display’s Panasonic at a company that’s been making top of the line products for a very long time.

I think that Romaine Reid’s was the best because it kept focus on what was being advertising was not completely devoted to solely displaying the filmmakers skills as some of the others did (Allow it is obvious that Mr. Reid is very skilled)

Paul Bryan is the clear winner here. He achieves the right objectives without killing the vibe. He draws you in with a killer soundtrack setting the pace with edgy motion visuals all while reminding you of the HISTORY of Panasonic as a leading television brand throughout the ever-changing electronic world of products.
