Komin Yamada, the Japanese designer behind the uber light and high performing GLOBAL line of cooking knives, is also responsible for Myodo & Co.’s gorgeous and extremely exclusive line called Sha Ra Ku Mono. Where GLOBAL has developed a healthy state-side following among food aficionados, Sha Ra Ku Mono is the new kid on the block– in fact, it’s so exclusive that, supposedly, the only U.S. retailer selling it is Seattle Cutlery, near the Pike Place Market. These knives feel like no other in your hand– perfectly balanced, amazingly light, and visually stunning to boot. If you’re interested, you can order directly from Seattle Cutlery. They’ve recently discounted the price on the Sha Ra Ku Mono line, so although you’re still going to take a big hit to the wallet, it won’t be as painful. For those of you who really care about your cutlery, these knives are the way to go for sure. I had a chance to see them up close over the weekend, and was completely blown away. More after the jump…

KY,

You are going to have to call Seattle Cutlery and order from them. I don’t think you can order online from anywhere else. Plus, as I said, their on sale right now at Seattle Cutlery. Their number is 206 441 8988. You’ll be the biggest bad ass at Hapa!

I took couldn’t find them. I hate calling up places but I guess I might as well. Do you remember the price for the Santoku?

Jamie Starr Monday, 04.23.07 @ 6:47 pm

No, I don’t remember the price on that specific knife, but they were all deeply discounted. Call them up– they’re really nice and helpful.

I bought two of these at seattle cutlery two years ago on my anniversery. I have a problem with one of them. They are the best knives I have ever owned. They keep there edges so well that I have not yet even had to have them re sharpened yet.(though they are probably due) One of the blades has a crack in it and I am curious about there guarantee or replacement?

Only available at Seattle Cutlery, that I know. Wonderful knives, I bought the Oriental (santoku) for $80. These are the sharpest knivves I’ve ever handled and am looking forward to adding more to my collection!

I just got a Sha Ra Ku Mono, the one that looks like a chef’s knife. It’s wicked sharp and felt good when I held it. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. I road tested it when I got home and I can serious get almost paper thin slices out of an onion.

I was given a couple of these knives a few years ago–a very nice Christmas present from a great friend who used to travel to Japan a lot.

I’ve only used one of them one time, to cut cold, hardened, leftover Thanksgiving turkey “like butter”. Mostly, I’m afraid I’ll either cut myself or somehow damage the beautiful things.

What is one to do when/if these knives DO need sharpening? Is that something I can do at home [with the proper sharpener/stone], or better left to a reliable professional?

I’m to take a knife skills class soon [another gift], and might order a couple more of these knives from Seattle as soon as I’m comfortable using them. I just have to figure out which knives I need [want].
