vancouver.jpg.jpeg I’m headed to Vancouver and then Whistler tomorrow for the week. I’m primarily out there to speak at a special industry session during the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival but I have ample time to explore Vancouver and hopefully catch more spring powder if this snow keeps up. I’m looking forward to it all.

I’ve never been to Vancouver, crazy right? So– where should I go? Shop? Eat? Explore? I’m told I should also hop over to Vancouver Island and see some whales or run with the bears or something too.

If you’ve got thoughts please leave a comment below, or drop me a note. Thanks!

Ah, enjoy riding out there. I wish I was still riding at this time of the year but all the snow is gone on the East Coast. Last year when I went, we dropped by a dim sum place, think it was Ming’s Garden in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Best dim sum I ever ate. Coming from me that’s a big statement. I grew up near NYC’s Chinatown and my father owns a dim sum restaurant…

Enjoy Whistler!

If you feel like going to Richmond (near the Vancouver airport) that is probably the best place for Chinese food in North America, I like Northern Delicacy in the Aberdeen Center Mall.

Random recommendations;

Food:

Kintaro (Denman & Robson) has incredibly good pork ramen for hella cheap

East is East (Broadway & something) is delicious organic roti rolls & eastern plates

Clothes:

Demicouture.ca has a good list of recommended men’s clothing shops in Van – http://demicouture.ca/2009/01/12/recommendations-for-menswear-shopping-in-vancouver-bc/

Robson St is the downtown shopping district, all the usual suspects (Zara, Banana Republic, Armani Exchange, etc). Smaller stores worth checking out include ‘You And Whose Army’ and ‘El Kartel’

Gastown has more in the way of little indie places, some of which are linked in the demicouture article above. The glass space fenced in by aging red brick that Fluevog inhabits there is definitely worth checking out.

To Do:

Lynn Canyon in North Vancouver is easily accessible and one of the most gorgeous hikes around. Suspension bridge is pretty sweet too.

‘How Soon Is Now’ at the Vancouver Art Gallery is supposed to be quite good, but I haven’t made it down there yet

‘Tron 2′ is filiming at my building, The Qube on West Georgia, this Saturday all day if you wanted to harass them. I suspect you’ll be up @ Whistler then, though.

The Telus concert series lineup at the Whistler thing you’re in town for looks pretty weak, with the exception of Metric. Really solid Canadian band, just put out a new album with a kickass single. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoK63Bk7pgw )

Studies in Motion: The Hauntings of Eadweard Muybridge is coming incredibly highly recommended from everyone I know who’s into theatre; http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=69502355953&h=t3pTI&u=im9cj&ref=mf

i was there last October. you should def check out Lynn Canyon and do the suspension bridge.

Capalino suspension bridge is the more touristy one, but they charge like $20 to basically walk across a bridge. Lynn Canyon’s bridge is free. Pick your poison.

Be sure to hit up Roden Gray in Gastown, the illest stop for menswear! Also check out So.cial (same neighborhood) for some great (and reasonably priced) sandwiches.

you absolutely MUST eat at Vij’s (Indian food) on Granville Street.
Unbelievable.

I’m a pushover for Izakaya food and Guu is one of my favorites I’ve been to. The one on Robson is my usual spot when I am in Vancouver. And I agree with crazyvirgo, Vij’s is a must if you want to experience some awesome high-end modern interpretations of Indian food. The lamb rack popsicles (I think that’s the dish name…) are awesome.
