St. Patrick’s Dia de Los Dunny - Josh Spear, Trendspotting

Cleveland-based artist Phoebe Marie is unabashed about her mixed heritage and unapologetic about her sense of humor. Following her breakout/sold out Dia De Los Dunny series, she did a few Halloween editions. Now, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Phoebe combines two seemingly disparate cultures into one awesome toy. Her series of six original customized Dunnys reimagines the platform toy as a group of “drunken leprechauns.” Although half the pieces have already been sold to those who appreciate the intersection of Mexican and Irish rituals, a couple are still available for $45 each here. Hello to everyone in the JoshSpear control tower,

A small request for this St. Patrick’s Day from an Irish designer. Please lead the fight against “St. Patty’s Day”. Irish people have no idea who this St. Patty is or why she’s hijacking our national holiday. While St. Patrick was a humble soul, I doubt he wants to share his hard earned day of honour.

When we want to be a little more familiar around Patrick we call him Paddy. Patty is what we call his cousin Patricia. I understand that “Paddy” and “Patty” sound pretty much the same in an American accent but they sound completely different when said by an Irish person.

So, as worldly-wise cultural commentators please lead the way in correcting this error. I would be eternally grateful if you could use any one of “St. Patricks day”, “Patrick’s day”, “St. Paddy’s day” or the plain “Paddy’s day”. All of these are acceptable.
