Gothamist reported yesterday that the MTA (the body that oversees the subways & buses here in NYC) has inked a $46M deal to wire the subway platforms throughout the city for cell phone use. Just the platforms, not the lines themselves. For those of you who haven’t been to NYC, the subway platforms aren’t the most comfortable places in the world. They’re dark, dank, dingy, and dirty. During the summer, the only thing you want to do down there is stand as still as possible and pray for a breeze. Of course, I’m told this is all a step up from 20 years ago.

But the deal begs a question: just how connected is TOO connected? Does anyone really need to be talking on their cell phone while they’re waiting for the train, only to have to hang up as soon as it gets there? Is there a point when we’re just too plugged in and a break becomes a good thing — even if it is waiting around on a hot, stinky subway platform? Oh, and I should clarify, the MTA is being paid $46M for this “convenience,” in case anyone was questioning their crystal-clear motives.

New York wouldn’t be the first city in the world to have its subway wired for cell phones. In the Shanghai metro, for instance, your cell works in the cars (and under the tunnels) as well as on the platforms. Sure it leads to people screaming into their phones on the subway, which is annoying, but it also makes meeting people easier. I’m for it.

most times it’s not the cell phone bearer that’s deeming how important the conversation is… it’s the caller. at least in my experience. remember, i’m not a ‘phone talker’

those platforms look scary. i wonder if we will ever have public transportation like that on oahu. like, ever. minus the scary platforms i’m jealous.
you see what they’re doing to the ferry. *sigh*

cell phones get me into trouble. often. the greater the number of places that prevent me from getting myself into trouble, the better (and/or GREATER). i’m pretty sure this applies to a lot of yous toos. down with the wires, man!

cell phones on planes scares me much more, because I’m literally stuck next to someone. but on subways, I have a lot more freedom of movement, so the irritability factor is much lower.

also, phones were originally installed in the tunnels for safety — and cell phones logically should promote a safer environment.. logically….

Great TSF topic this week Danny!

I’m all for it, although I’m much less interested in talking on my phone– just want to use my BlackBerry/iPhone, etc!

Screw cellphone, How about free high-speed WiFi?

In Mexico City we couldn’t get a signal on the subway platforms until about a year or year and a half ago…

The old days were very annoying, just going into this big black hole… “I called you, but your phone went to voicemail… ” “Um… yeah, I was on the Metro… ”

Then I remember the period of time where the word spread… “I’ll meet you by the ticket window, don’t worry, I’ll call you… yeah, now there’s a signal… ”

And now it’s just normal. You still lose signal between stations, but really, I spend much more time IN stations than BETWEEN stations…

So yeah, I gotta agree, cellphones on subways are a good thing… !
