Tequila 5150 is a new American tequila, or rather an “eau de vie de agave,” and the first of its kind. Frank Leal, owner of Leal Vineyards in Hollister, CA is the first American to legally import blue agave into the U.S. He decided to apply wine making techniques to the tequila-making process, such as using wine barrels instead of old bourbon barrels. Crazy? Absolutely. While Frank was telling his good friend and local county sheriff about his California tequila making plans, the immediate response was “Frank, you are so 5150!” (5150 is the California police code for a mentally disturbed or insane person).

Tequila 5150 is currently available in California (BevMo) and Florida … keep an eye out for the spirit coming your way soon.

CORRECTION: Turns out that while Frank Leal is the first to bring in blue agave plants, Tequila 5150 is currently bottled down at Frankie’s Mexican distillery. As soon as his agave plants mature (which, apparently takes eight years) you’ll have 100% U.S. of A. tequila. Hence the Hecho en Mexico sticker on the bottle.

If he’s importing the blue agave into the States why do the bottles say “Made in Mexico?”

As a rock fan, 5150 sounds to me like a Van Halen response to former frontman’s Sammy Haggar’s Cabo Wabo tequila. (Van Halen has an album called “5150″). Since there’s no mention of VH, I guess I’m reading too much into it!

Hi to the Cyberwold from Berkeley, CA.

Not too long ago, my boss gave me a bottle of “Tequila 5150″ to celebrate a personal achievement. He could not have given me anything better! At first, I was a bit disappointed with the tequila; it was not the regular brand that I always hear about. For that reason, I questioned it’s quality and taste. That was my initial reaction upon my new intoxicating-toy.

About a month passed-by and I was afraid of opening the bottle, mainly because it was a special gift and I was unsure about the tequila. I thought to myself, “if the tequila is bad and I open it, then I would have ruined a special gift.” Thus, the tequila bottle sat in my room cabinet for another couple of weeks.

One night, I was drinking at “The Bears Lair” – the bar on campus – (Oh yeah, I am a UC Berkeley architecture student) with a couple of friends and after the Lair we headed over to my place – to pick up the bottle – then we continue the ‘happy times’ to another friends’ place. Don’t let me say more about that night, let me just tell you that it was “muy chevere!” The “Tequila 5150″ was a total hit w/ my friends and very tasteful. I must admit it, I’ve never tasted tequila this good. Best of all, when I woke up the next day, no hangover!! Oh, I love the taste!

After that night, I made it my goal to buy more of this “agua vendita” – holy water- but everywhere I looked there was nothing. For about two months I looked and looked and nothing. Well, I have to look no more. Don’t call me greedy but I got all three tequila bottles – the only ones the BevMo had!

One thing I really don’t like about the tequila:

1. The bottle could have a much clever design. It’s simple rectangular shape fails to captivate the eye!

2. The US flag design on the bottle. Please, leave the flag for something else and not tequila. As far as I know, tequila is a Mexican product. The US flag is everywhere, now tequila. That just does not seem logical.

I’m with you on the Van Haggar connection.

I know a thing or two about tequilas and 5150 is average at best. I recommend Mr. Leal to stick to wine making and leave the tequila making to people that have their heart in it. I like the name 5150 and I think is irrelevant if he took that from Van Halen. Hopefully Van Halen will take it as a compliment and we won’t see this end in court.

I agree with the wierd kid from Berkley in the sense that he should not use the American Flag on the bottles. Not only is that elegal according to the TTB department but even people that don’t drink tequila know that Tequila is a Mexican product and even when he starts distilling the juice from the Agave plants that he brought from Mexico he won’t be able to call it Tequila or he will get in big trouble if not ask Mr. Temequila.

So to recap:
the name 5150 ( ok even though he took it from Van Halen)
the flag (a big no because its disrespectful and the TTB will come after you)
Bringing Agave Plants from Mexico ( very stupid, you won’t be able to call it tequila.)
