It sounds too good to be true. A system where accommodating souls across the seven continents volunteer to put you, a complete stranger, up for a night or two (and maybe even show you around town), in the interest of cross-cultural learning, friendship and increasing the peace on our planet. But this is Hospitality Club. There is no cost, no obligation to host (although they obviously encourage this), your email address remains hidden and signing up is a breeze. Not everyone is up for this kind of personal space invasion, and I know plenty who would never consider it, but I like their energy: giving cynicism the kibosh and letting karma guide your actions. The truth is that for a long-term budget traveler, this is an unrivaled opportunity. So what’s with the pineapple? It’s the international symbol for hospitality. Duh.

Done that! Use the hospitality of HC members lots of times during a trip do Europe last winter…. Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, everywhere I found a nice HC member who hosted me only for the pleasure of meeting new people from around the world…

Try also http://www.couchsurfing.com

There is also Couchsurfing (www.couchsurfing.com) and Global Freedloaders (www.globalfreeloaders.net). Personally, I only have experience with Couchsurfing and most people that come through our apartment agree that it is the better of the three. We’ve had over 20 people come to our place in the last seven months. Now I have a global network of couches for myself and any friends going through Europe. Out of those 20+ people, we’ve only had one bad experience with a group of five that were a bit inconsiderate with our space.

This is pretty old story really…
And it seems it is already on the way to closing down in fact. There is has been a lot of talking been done on the fact that on these sites over 70% of the hosts are males in their 20s, a number of which uses this site to ‘meet’ girls. Always in an innocent way but nevertheless bothering and annoying.

Personally I would not really suggest people to do this while Euro tripping: your hosts will consider you as another American turist, just VERY cheap. No good impressions about you sticking around really….
