Most people think pirates went the way of Blackbeard a long time ago, resurrected only for Broadway musicals and blockbuster movies starring Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley. While some still sail the high seas with more modern weaponry and less swashbuckling, it's a modern form of cultural piracy that is the subject of Matt Mason's new book, The Pirate’s Dilemma: How Youth Culture Is Reinventing Capitalism. The frequent VICE magazine contributor “charts the rise of various youth movements — from pirate radio to remix culture — and tracks their ripple effect throughout larger society” for what amounts to a fascinating read. If you're interested in having your eyes opened wide to how the counterculture has transformed society then we certainly suggest picking up this primer.

If you want one for free, well, you’re in luck. First five (polite!) commenters get their own, so…comment away!

Matthew Nelson Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:15 pm

I would love to get my paws on a copy of this book. I work in youth communications and branding, so the more knowlegde and good reads I can get the better (and I am olny 25). Another great book along these lines is The Warhol Economy by Elizabeth Currid. More about that here:

Sean Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:23 pm

This looks good from the Amazon description. I’m interested in how broadly defined pirate is. aargh!

Anitra Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:23 pm

Oooh, sounds neat! Reminds me of another “culture wars” book I love: Commodify Your Dissent, by the folks who ran the Baffler.

David Blair Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:26 pm

Sounds cool, love Vice! Btw this site rules, got some very cool Xmas prezzies thanks to the Spear.

david buckley Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:37 pm

Consider this another polite comment. Looking forward to reading the book.

Hans Dayal Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:46 pm

…I would love to find out more about how this generation of youth is “reinventing” capitalism – seems like old news with a new package to me, but I would love to be wrong…

Elit Alice Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 3:48 pm

i would like one please! :) please please with cherry on top? could i be more polite? :)

I agree. This sounds pretty interesting.

Chris Rollason Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:02 pm

Pirates just never get old do they?

Randeep Rekhi Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:02 pm

Sounds like an interesting read. a more aggressive/intelligent youth generation can really give the older, conventional business standard a run for it’s money. especially with the internet…

Eli! Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:05 pm

I’d love a copy. Sounds good.

Steve Balogh Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:06 pm

I’d like to check this out, sounds interesting.

I like free books too!

Bruce Keener Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:11 pm

I’d love a copy, so I don’t have to pirate it later ;)

Jevan Lautz Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:15 pm

would be stoked to get a copy. check out “Chasing Cool” if you haven’t.

Molly Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:16 pm

I’m a fan of the blog and have yet to ever comment, but figured what better time than now! This sounds like an interesting read (plus, after reading the Amazon review, I am really curious how a male model who messed with disco records in the 1970s influenced the way Boeing designs airplanes…)

Brett Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:18 pm

This sounds like a good book, I’d love a free copy!

Austin C Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:19 pm

This looks like a good read for someone just starting a macroeconomics course…cough…like myself. I’d be honored.*

*Duly polite. :)

Katie Conway Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:25 pm

While I like reading, novels aren’t my thing. I like books that I can relate to the world around me. This sort of book seems to be just that.

Marc Moss Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:31 pm

I’m interested to read this book now, then again in five years to see how it holds up over time.

Humpty Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:33 pm

ahh the good ol’ days. i remember when music was something you either bought in a store or recorded from the radio on your boombox. now there are so many ways of getting what music you want it is hard not to jump on the piracy train. Remember Napster?

Lucas Smith Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:40 pm

More is needed on this topic. This does look good.

Ty Ziskis Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:41 pm

Wow i cant wait to read this, it sounds very interesting. Thank you joshspear.com for keeping me up to date with everyting hip, and thanks for the book!

Daniel Benney Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:41 pm

I live in Cornwall. Lots of history of Pirates ;-) Look forward to reading this.

Garret P Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:46 pm

This book sounds awesome! Isn’t it funny how many of the greatest innovations come from those snubbing the status quo?

starlajo Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:49 pm

Yes please, I would like to readt this. Thanks! :)

jim rome Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:50 pm

The generation gap is widening, as evidenced by our law makers failing to understand the competitive market place. Take for example the sirius/xm merger, old school thinking won’t allow them to see that the playing field has changed and that they don’t only compete with each other but with the broad spectrum of delivery options. Lead, change or get out of the way.

tom Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:50 pm

This is just the type of book that everyone should read. in the immediate history that is our present, these types of books are perfect for anticipating cultural drift and progression. I cant wait to read it.

M@ Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:52 pm

this sounds fascinating! I can’t wait to read it.

Victor Van Scoit Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:56 pm

I’d be curious about the book. Is it trying to establish the normal cycle that counter cultures establish the new standards in society? Or is it accepting that cycle and just delving into how specifically the ripples of this one have changed our standards already?

Justin Dionisio Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:56 pm

I am always game for a good read – especially coming from the outlook that vice takes. Thanks Evan!

Craig Williams Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 4:58 pm

This sounds like a really interesting book. Being written by a Vice Magazine contributer is icing on the cake!

Aaron Herbert Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:02 pm

Today’s restless youth are certainly giving big business a run for their money. Who’s getting taken advantage of now? Can’t wait to see what Mason has to say.

ali Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:07 pm

Open source is the future. If big business doesn’t get onboard then they’ll be surpassed in one way or the other. I’m glad the pirating trend has had more lasting effects on society like pointing out flaws in antiquated systems, in order to better our crazed capitalist society rather than just raise fears of copyright, etc.. Give the kids a chance.

Nat Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:08 pm

Sah-weet. :)

Chris Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:09 pm

I Love BOOKS and PIRATES!

henri Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:16 pm

Evan, what a great proposition! The subject seems to be very interesting…

Andrei Chahine Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:19 pm

yes please!

Sotheby Chung Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:21 pm

Gotta love free booty! Sounds like an interesting read.

Gunnar Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:24 pm

Kind sir, I would be pleased to be sent a book.

G Allen Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:25 pm

This should be an interesting read especially since some aspects of youth culture have definitely embraced the pirate mentality of ruthless capitalism and a flexible morality, i.e. the rampant file sharing of music and now movies, permissive attitudes towards cheating, etc.

Weissman Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:28 pm

This one does sound fun thanks Josh.

Parisa Ghaderi Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:30 pm

this book looks amazing! it’s funny how counterculture becomes culture.. then it’s time for a new counterculture. yay for free books!

Nev Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:31 pm

I love books,.. they make me smarterer : )

The mind, once expanded to the dimensions of larger ideas, never returns to its original size.
Oliver Wendell Holmes

Takeo Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:36 pm

Free books aaaaaare good.
there was a pretty funny article about Juggalo fest on Vice the other day. Now there’s a youth culture movement to write about.

vic Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:39 pm

gimme gimme gimme please

Chi-Wai Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:42 pm

Can’t wait to read this book!

Labelina Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:43 pm

If Seth Godin endorses this book (not to mention Josh Spear), then I’d certainly be interested in reading it.

Julie K Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:44 pm

Since I’m now dangerously on the edge of the coveted 18-34 demo, sign me up before it’s too late

Tom Sullivan Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 5:45 pm

This sounds like a great read. Thanks!

Mike Darling Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:01 pm

It’s about time someone like Mason took on this subject in book-length form. Sounds like it’s definitely worth a read.

Jared Bengtson Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:02 pm

Arrrr matey, I would be very interested in reading this book!!

May G. Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:10 pm

Anyone who can tell me how a nun invented dance music is cool in my books (no pun intended…er, not really). Oh, and if you love dance music (or the more unisex “electronica”), then listen to the album Idealism from Digitalism. While reading The Pirate’s Dilemma.

Michael Falcone Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:11 pm

This is a fascinating topic and especially important to artists. As a musician and long time pirate myself, I’ve recently decided to delete every single illegally downloaded mp3 in my library. With 2,974 less songs to listen to I’ve come to appreciate those that are left much more. I’m also discovering amazing new indie music that I never would have before simply because it wasn’t easily downloadable off of pirate sites. Now if only I can muster up the willpower to do this with movies! Maybe this book will make me that much more enlightened about the subject. Can’t wait to read it!

Casey Hogue Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:12 pm

As an agency art director I’m a junky when it comes to any book with a slant on how consumers sway markets (and not vice versa).

I just finished up “The Rise of the Creative Class: And How It’s Transforming Work, Leisure, Community and Everyday Life” by Richard Florida and am on the hunt for the next good read. This definitely sounds like it fits the bill.

Nicolas Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:12 pm

I’m really looking forward to read that book! Great news as always Mr Spears!

zain Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:16 pm

Please give me a copy :) I need to re-cultivate my reading habit again :D

Julien L Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:17 pm

Finally an interesting book on our culture! Hope it offers some new point of views…

Ethan Bodnar Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:23 pm

Hey there,

This sounds like a great book and I would be interested in getting my hands on a copy. It should be interesting since I am a youth. Thanks for the offer.

Best,
Ethan

Andrew Ferguson Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:25 pm

I’d love a copy, please :)

Andrea Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:26 pm

and here I just thought youth were reinventing leg warmers – who knew they were transforming society.

Andrew Ferguson Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:38 pm

Apparently I’m a bit behind the curve. I coulda sworn there was only one comment when I wrote mine o.O

Andrew Ferguson Tuesday, 01.08.08 @ 6:39 pm

Ahh, time difference. It’s currently 3:39 here, not 6:39.

You might want to look at the timestamping features on your entries, Evan :)
