There’s no telling how our top-secret-industry-ninja-spies landed this one on our desk, but we have been listening to The Shins‘ new album, ‘Wincing the Night Away’ all afternoon, and it’s safe to say we’re in love with it. There are definitely remnants of the sound we heard in ‘Chutes Too Narrow,’ but there is a matured natural progression present in ‘Wincing the Night Away’ that shows us that the Shins are at the top of their game. Lyrically, the album is top-notch, and several songs provide a beat-laden, almost-experimental sound that simultaneously sustains and impresses the ear. ‘Phantom Limb’ is a stunner of a song and will be the first single to be released– that should be sometime next week, so keep an ear out. Other favorite tracks of ours are ‘Sleeping Lessons’ for it’s distant, xylophone-based background and ‘Sea Legs,’ for its Beck-esque beat. Look for this album to make a big splash when it’s released in full on January 23rd by Sub Pop Records. It is my estimation that this album will springboard The Shins to the top– and I will definitely be buying the album to show my support.

your top-secret-industry-ninja-spies must not be that great — the cd leaked a month ago and everybody else has it too.

I doubt the guys at JS steal music…. which is what you’re referring to.

Max is right, your ninjas are a bit slow but nevertheless the songs i have heard are pretty good especially Australia & Phantom Limb. The new album definitely sounds like it will be their most consistent and enjoyable album yet.

I would also like to add if you like the new Album, go out and buy the cd or buy it on itunes. Help support your favorite artists so that they can’t keep making the music we love.

I love the new shins album. I have purchased every single one before it and i love them all nearly as much. This album is just genius. It’s new sound has shown me that the band has learnt more about themselves, with the new mix of electronic and acoustic sound, and the improved drumming. If i werent so mesmorized while listening to it, i would be astonished. I love the shins and it makes me sad to know that people take their music off the internet without buying an album>>>> support the band people, im pretty sure they’ve poured their lives out into their jobs.

Red Rabbits might be James Mercers greatest achievement as a writer to date.
