TrailerwrapWhile it is not statistically likely that you — a loyal JoshSpear.com reader — live in a trailer, these abodes serve an important role in our society. With ever-increasing wage and wealth disparities in our economy, many American families look to the mass-produced mobile home as an affordable and convenient place to live. Unfortunately, a trailer park stigma exists due to the consensus that these things are horrendous looking and could be blown over in a second by the ‘big bad wolf.’ Thanks to Trailer Wrap — a project initiated by the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Architecture and Planning — the trailer park stigma may begin to subside. The idea behind Trailer Wrap is to provide simple and affordable solutions to improve the condition of mobile home–addressing lack of comfort, inefficiency, and poor aesthetics. Trailer Wrap comes in the form of a simple, affordable kit that can be assembled easily by just a few people. Thanks to hard work by students, dedicated faculty, and help from a wealth of sponsors, Trailer Wrap continues to build steam to become a widely implemented concept. Thanks to Boulder-based architect and buddy Brian Nelson for a heads up on this one.

Wow, I finally feel like I’ve made it. JoshSpear.com has picked up on my seinor school project from CU and thinks its cool enough to talk about. This project started with a team of three students in the spring of 2005 and through the hard work of professor Michael Hughes and his students has grown and been realized. The term trailer trash takes on a whole new meaning. Thanks Josh.

Adam,

I have a building site available in Denver, close to light rail. It would be fun to pursue this idea.

Trailer Wrap is alive with potential…it is unfortunate that the budget wasn’t as suitable for its ambition, as anyone driving by lately by can see. I am not sure getting Josh’s attention is as credible or exciting as getting on the Fabprefab.com site,..from an architectural standpoint. Although he is right in that our nation needs manufactured homes to fill the gap where standard methoids are too costly. Moreover, lots of a Architecture(s) suffer from critics as well as unwarranted amounts of Glamor despite delusional expectations of results. So cheers to the kids, but beware the neighbors’ opinions, envy , or digust. Didn;t I hear a rumor that Thistle owns all that land now….(I feel sorry for the neighbors actually).

I appreciate seeing this concept being promoted being a trailer dweller myself. It is disheartening for those of us who can’t afford a fancy ‘green’ shelter. While, it might be true that manufactured homes are not very environmental sound and are full of toxic chemicals, recycling them seems to be better in the long run than crushing them and burying them in a landfill.

I have come to resent all of the high priced solutions to save the planet which are affordable only to those 5% who make enough to afford them. Thank you for thinking of us low income people.

I went to the original website http://www.trailerwrap.net to review the drawings and information but I was not able to connect. Does anyone know it the information is still available on line? I have one of these older trailers that could beneft from a trailerwrap makeover! I would appreciate any help you may be able to provide. Thanks.
