I’ve been drooling over the U-Boat Watches for some time, but I only saw them with a crazy markup at Barneys. After a bunch of research I found a site with not only the best prices on the entire line, but also an incredible resource for all european watch enthusiasts. WatchUseek.com is a site run by a real enthusiast. It has a shop with a handful of hard to find European brands, and a great interactive forum to ask questions in, etc. The U-Boat line is unusual, it was a design from the early 1940’s that never was produced due to the political situation in Italy at the time. In 2000 all the original plans, samples, and drawings were recovered and the watch line was finally created. I picked up the Left Hook 45 with a black face. All the watches are individually numbered and come with an additional band– and yes, they’re just as big as they look!

Josh: I am a watch enthusiast that really likes large watches. Could you please tell me if the U-Boat watches are only available with a leather/rubber strap or if they are available with a stainless steel or PVD bracelet? Finally, do you know the web-sites and/or US retailers where I can buy the watch here in the States? I would very much appreciate if you could assist me with these two questions. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks. Joel Felman (”joelf@comcast.net”).

I just bought a u-boat left hook. Does anyone out there know how to change the time on these watches? The pin only seems to change the date…

The pin has two positions when you pull it; if you pull it once you can adjust the date, if you pull it further you can adjust the time. Don’t screw the cover on to hard, be gentile, otherwise it might loose its water resistance…

The above pictured watch is impressive. I bought a Tauchmeister on eBay for $110. I don’t know to how to feel. Yes it sucks to be poor. But at least my watch is cool. Just as cool as this U-Boat.

George,
You should feel great about your Tauchmeister. U-Boats, at price points between $2000 and $3200, should have antireflective coated sapphire glass. Instead, U-Boats use hardened mineral glass just like your Tauchmeister. It is very susceptible to being inadvertently scratched. Sure, U-boats look nice, and so does your Tauchmeister…at a much more reasonable cost given the quality of the most at-risk component to the daily wearer.

Bought a U-Boat from Cruise in Glasgow a few years ago for around £900. Love the watch but within a few months noticed a scratch on the watch face. Also the strap was wearing really badly and had to swap to the spare. Have since put it in my drawer and gone back to my Mappin & Webb which, while not an eye catcher, seems better suited to everyday wear. Love the design, but for such a large watch I really have to question their durability.
