Another gem of a shop I ran into today was Universe on a T-Shirt, a small workshop space on Bloemdwarsstraat, off the busy street of Rozengracht. They primarily sell t-shirt and sweatshirts on which they hand print their sometimes elaborate and always beautiful designs. They hope to help people avoid what they call the H&M effect, AKA going out and meeting 3 other people, all in the same t-shirt. Every single shirt is made right there in the shop, and each piece is unique (or as they say unique messy and colorful). They use the highest possible printing techniques with hand made mosaic patterns– they also believe in fair and ethical trade and all the shirts are made under supervision of the Fairware Foundaiton. The good news is you don’t have to hoof it all the way to Amsterdam to get their stuff– you can check it out and buy it online, they ship worldwide. After we had made our purchase it was a delight to find out that the couple running the shop were actually JoshSpear.com readers!

I think that it is incredibly cool that the Internet has opened up so many options for small business owners all over the world that offer unique merchandise. It looks like the Universe at a T-shirt company has decided to do a unique and interesting twist on a the classic T-shirt idea, and their designs are both interestingly, beautiful, and colorful enough that they immediately made me want one. However, if it weren’t for the connectivity of the Internet I would never have known about them, much less have the opportunity to buy it as I am unlikely to ever travel to Amsterdam. I also like the fact that you mentioned that everything is supervised by the “Fairware Foundation” so that I know that even though these products are coming from somewhere I’ve never been, they weren’t manufactured in a sweat shop.

Beautiful! The latest that I’ve seen among shirts so far are tribal designs. Those designs are really unique as they are handmade. It’s good to know that they ship worldwide. Now I have an idea what to give to my dad, brother, and boyfriend.
