As promised my presentation last week at Google Zeitgeist is now online for your viewing pleasure– the fine group at Google did an extraordinary job editing and posting the video to YouTube. It was truly an honor to speak alongside such an incredible lineup of presenters, and a lot of fun talking about the work side of my life which I really keep out of this blog most of the time. Also be sure to check out the interview with Michael and Xochi Birch as I’m on the panel during that discussion as well. And of course, if you enjoy it feel free to leave a comment here and give me 5 stars on YouTube! I look forward to reactions!

Well done.

It’s interesting, because I’m far more engaged in what you have to say, seeing this video. Digging through this blog (which I do far too often) I’ve kind of gotten the impression that you are a fairly successful design snob, and half-figured that in person you might actually be something of a dick. But actually seeing and hearing you talk about these things, this world that you walk through, I can actually see your passion for the whole thing.

I spent 7 years handling all the branding and marketing for a well-known toy company…I re-branded the entire thing, re-did their entire image, and designed or re-designed their entire product line. I’d be really curious to get your opinions on some of the work that I did, for no better reason than I’d like to know how my own ideas about branding stack up to yours.

If you’ve got time, please drop me a line. (I know that’s a stretch, asking YOU if you have TIME, but what the hell…if you don’t ask, the answer is always “no”.)

Thanx,

S

I have been reading your blog for about three years. Yours was the gateway blog in my life of the many many more (coolhunting, core77, etc.) that i read daily. (I found joshspear.com, and the rest of this design blog world, by googling marc jacobs vans one day.) Your presentation was just as fascinating for me as it must have been to your older, professional audience, as I am, for all intensive purposes, Ally. I’m 17, about to graduate high school, raised of the digital age. I have a 6th sense about where my cell phone is, I have facebook, I bought my ipod case on etsy. Man, you are so spot on about my life!

Of course I am completely aware of my digital existence as a participant in this facet of the internet, but it was a whole other thing to hear you talk about it like this.

I don’t know what my career will be, but yours sounds amazing. I’d love to learn more about it, if you’re willing to share, or send me some links. Once again, I was really impressed. Great job!

I’ll be reading,

Rachel

Excellent presentation. Not sure who was in the audience but they definitely seemed to need some education on all the “new fangled” technology that is being used out there. You did a great job connecting the dots as to why the digital generation uses these sites. As you pointed out, those who are not familiar with these services can not understand why people use them, it seems like too much effort. But for the digital generation, these are must haves like the lastest fashion trend or electronic gadget because it promotes their individuality. Nice work.

Hey Josh — Great presentation. I especially appreciated the end of your presentation where you addressed the world of traditional advertising and it’s lack of relevance to today’s Digital Natives. Say, do you think there’s anyway we could see the presentation you gave? It was tough to view the screen through a screen.

Again, great job.

Most interesting thing for all my clients and colleagues that I’m showing this to? No mention of MySpace!

Great presentation, and one of the few that I did actually learn something new from - virtual gifting as a future possibility.

Thanks

Very interesting in getting into the behaviour and habits of Ally. What I would be interested in, from your experience, is that is the a US-centric trend? What about regions such as Europe and Asia? Are they following similar behavioural trends?

I wonder? Wednesday, 11.07.07 @ 5:42 pm

I’m blown away that people who come to Josh Spear.com were blown away by his presentation. Don’t get me wrong, Josh is a good speaker and provides meaningful insight. However, I’m shocked that anyone who is even remotely current with trends (especially internationally) would find his presentation to be groundbreaking. Europe and Asia have been engaging in many of these behavioral patterns for years. Anyone in a position of power at their company who is not familiar with these trends should be fired or at the very least fear for their jobs. In my opinion, the most important piece of information gathered from Josh’s presentation is people are lazy and there’s always money to be made by schooling sedentary executives on the trends that kids care about. In that space Josh is a true entrepreneur. How many of the people in attendance went back to their offices and immediately called a meeting saying, “What’s our Twitter strategy?!?!? We need a Twitter strategy!!” Then, they all logged on and couldn’t figure out how to use it. Good thing they have Josh’s card and can have him consult :o) Go Josh!
